Countdown To Euro 2012: 10 Days To Go - Russia

Russia

How'd they get here: Won qualifying Group B

Last Appearance: Euro 2008 (semi-finals)

Best Appearance: Euro 1960 (Champions as U.S.S.R.)

Schedule:
                        June 8 vs Czech Republic
                        June 12 vs Poland
                        June 16 vs Greece

The Story:

The Russians came out of Euro 2008 as undoubtedly the talk of the tournament. A semi-final berth at the expense of the Netherlands had everyone rightfully talking about Guus Hiddink's side. The 3-0 loss to eventual winner Spain did nothing to quell people's opinion that this Russian side was a team on the rise. 4 years later and one failed World Cup qualifying campaign (for the 2010 World Cup) has caused several changes for a Russian team that no one knows what to expect from.

The first change being behind the bench, gone is "Lucky" Guus replaced by fellow Dutchman Dick Advocaat. Andrei Arshavin (now the team's captain) is no longer the darling of Europe but rather a frustratingly inconsistent Arsenal FC Player that has struggled in the last couple of EPL seasons. A player that will have to step up if Russia has any aspirations in matching (or topping) Euro 2008's showing. The team is also entering the tournament with unusual circumstances as it is known that Advocaat is stepping down from the bench after the competition. Whether or not this will have an effect or not on the psyche of the Russian players remains to be seen.

The Dark Knight Rises vs. The Avengers

Last year, everyone would have told you The Dark Knight Rises was going to be the must-see movie of the year and the highest grossing as well. It has a lot to live up to, but Nolan is a trustworthy director who has yet to disappoint his audience. The Dark Knight was one of the most hyped movies of all time when it was released and until the final Harry Potter film came out last year, it held the top spot on the opening weekend chart. As everyone knows, The Avengers abolished both opening weekend amounts, besting Harry Potter’s by nearly $40 million.
So how was The Avengers able to overcome even the most generous estimates and perform so well at the box office? Aside from being the biggest blockbuster of all time, combining four Marvel franchises into one movie, Marvel initiated a marketing campaign that probably had a budget equal to that of the entire film’s production. They released countless TV spots and clips, and as many people joked, you could have combined all the released footage and watched the entire film at home. Regardless, people still showed up and are still showing up to watch the film in theaters.

Countdown To Euro 2012: 11 Days To Go - Sweden

Sweden

How'd they get here: Advanced automatically as the best runner-up in the qualifying group stage

Last Appearance: Euro 2008

Best Appearance: Euro 1992 (Semi-finals)

Schedule:
                        June 11 vs Ukraine
                        June 15 vs England
                        June 19 vs France

The Story:

Sweden's success in this tournament will most likely rise and fall based on their star forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic's form and knowing Zlatan (as well as someone who follows his career through the media can know someone), he wouldn't have it any other way. Sweden comes into this tournament as one of the unknowns because of their aging but experienced side that has been fairly inconsistent as of late. Head coach Erik Hamrén will employ an attacking 4-3-3 formation with this team that will look to stretch opposing teams therefore creating spaces for the talented attacking players this team possesses.

Much like Croatia, the problem with this Swedish team is on the defensive end of the ball as the back four will be anchored by 34 year old former Aston Villa player Olof Mellberg and 35 year old Celtic defender Daniel Majstorović. If the other Group D members can exploit what looks to be the weakest point of this Sweden team, the Swedes could be in for a long tournament. In attack Sweden looks to be as talented as its Group D counterparts with a young midfield core led by Sebastian Larsson (scored a couple of screamers for Sunderland this season) hoping to provide service to Johann Elmander and Zlatan Ibrahimovic up front.

Game of Thrones Season 2 Episode 9 - "Blackwater"

If you plan to watch this episode, do not read the following article until you have watched it. Ok realistically I can’t stop you, but there are SPOILERS below. You have been warned.

I’ve tried about three different ways to start off this review, but I really can’t express how amazing I thought his episode was. For the first time in this series, the entire episode focused on only area of Westeros and it was completely warranted. If they had stuck to flip flopping around the whole map, this episode wouldn’t have had the impact that it did. “Blackwater” focuses on the long awaited war between Stannis and the Lannisters, with some amazing side bits.

June 2012 Movie Preview

June 1st

Snow White and the Huntsman – A dark twist on a classic children’s fairytale, Snow White gets help from the Huntsman in this one in her attempt to overthrow the Queen. It is anticipated to fair better than the other Snow White film released earlier this year (Mirror Mirror) and is led by Twilight star Kristin Stewart and the God of Thunder, Chris Hemsworth.

June 8th

Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted – The third installment in this animated series looks to be the worst one yet, with the animals being chased once again, but this time in Europe. The jokes seem played out and even though the film may not live up to the previous two, it’s bound to do well at the box office given its 3D upgrade, even though it’s going up against the must-see film of the month, Prometheus.

Prometheus – Up until a few months ago, people could only speculate what Prometheus was about. We’ve gotten more than enough information now to know that it is not a prequel to Ridley Scott’s Alien, but it does take place in a similar setting (and there are aliens involved). If you’re into science fiction, you’re in for a treat because Prometheus is shaping out to become one of the best science fiction movies in a long time (even though they are rarely made anymore – unless it’s an alien invasion).

Countdown To Euro 2012: 12 Days To Go - Croatia

Croatia

How'd they get here: Defeated Turkey in the qualification play-off

Last Appearance: Euro 2008

Best Appearance: Euro 1996, Euro 2008 (Quarter-finals)

Schedule:
                        June 10 vs Ireland
                        June 14 vs Italy
                        June 18 vs Spain

The Story:

No longer one of Europe's dark-horses (Croatia finished 3rd in the '98 World Cup behind prolific goal scorer Davor Suker), Croatia will see advancing past the group stage a successful trip in what is to be head coach Slaven Bilic's last time (he's leaving for club side Lokomotiv Moscow after the tournament) leading his country. Bilic's side has several top-tier talents but unfortunately for him they are all found on the attacking side with Croatia's back four leaving plenty to be desired.

Former Tottenham defender Vedran Corluka has fallen out of form (he basically sucks now) and no longer earns his pay from the North London club, Domagoj Vida is an unproven 23 year old, Gordon Schildenfeld plays in the German Second Division (this would be like a Team USA player who plays in the NBDL), and Josip Simunic is a 34 year old who is looking at his prime in the rear view mirror. When this is your probable starting defense, you had better hope that your team can score A LOT of goals.

How’d they get here: Won a play-off against Montenegro after finishing second to Spain in qualifying.

June 12 vs. Greece

The Right Decision for DC Comics

A few years ago during a reading of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, J.K. Rowling revealed to all of her fans know that one of her most beloved characters, Albus Dumbledore, was gay. This didn’t affect anyone who had already read the books because Dumbledore was such a lovable character and a favorite to many readers, including myself. Of the people who hadn’t read the series, it probably had the greatest effect on the gay community (now that the best character in one of the most popular series of all time was a homosexual).

Let me explain why I don’t care about J.K. Rowling’s announcement, and why you shouldn’t either. Rowling said that it was apparent in the books that Dumbledore had been a homosexual all along… What? There was not a single line in the book that even remotely suggested that Dumbledore was gay. It’s evident that Rowling’s decision to make Dumbledore gay was simply an attempt to gain publicity from the gay community, and I’m sure it worked to some extent. It didn’t really affect the future of Harry Potter because Rowling had finished writing all the books and Dumbledore’s sexual orientation was meaningless.

Just recently, DC Comics announced that one of their “iconic” characters was coming out of the closet. Evidently, this is an attempt to gain publicity in the same way J.K. Rowling did, and with U.S. President Barrack Obama recently stating that he supports gay marriage, there is no better time for DC to convert one of their lead males to the other side. But is it a good idea? Will it generate publicity in the same way Harry Potter did? I don’t think so, unless DC chooses the right character.

Countdown To Euro 2012: 14 Days To Go - Poland

Poland

How'd they get here: Automatically qualified as co-hosts

Last Appearance: Euro 2008

Best Appearance: Euro 2008 (Group Stage)

Schedule:
June 8 vs Greece
                        June 12 vs Russia
                        June 16 vs Czech Republic

The Story:

The other co-host of this year's competition finds itself at #14 in this Euro 2012 Countdown. The Poles come into the tournament with an unproven squad hoping to give the home faithful something to cheer about. The benefit of automatically qualifying for the tournament as a co-host might prove to be detrimental to Poland's chances as this team has not played a meaningful game as a country for quite some time (they completely missed out on the qualifying process and have only played friendlies in preparation for the tournament). However the fact that they lucked out in the draw ending up in Group A puts them in a much better position than fellow co-host Ukraine to actually get out of the Group Stage.

NCAA Football: A Proposition

You can make the case that in every sport there are a few things that need to be updated or revamped. The NBA needs to do something about TV timeouts so that the last 4 minutes of a close game don’t last over half an hour in real life. The entire soccer world needs to slowly start phasing in modern technology such as live replays and coaches challenges because it isn’t the 1800s anymore and there’s really no need to be blowing calls due to human error (or when Serbia’s playing, paid refs). The NFL should probably consider firing commissioner Roger Goodell before he turns the league into some weird non-contact, flag football organization. However, no matter what your opinion is on other matters, everyone can agree that NCAA football needs a complete overhaul. The current Bowl Championship Series is probably the biggest atrocity in all of sports and needs to be changed immediately.

Countdown To Euro 2012: 15 Days To Go - Ukraine

Ukraine

How'd they get here: Automatically qualified as co-hosts

Last Appearance: Never (1992 as the U.S.S.R.)

Best Appearance: N/A

 Schedule:
                        June 11 vs Sweden
                        June 15 vs France
                        June 19 vs England

The Story:

One of the competition's co-hosts appear to be stumbling to the starting line as the tournament draws closer and closer. First there is the political turmoil surrounding the imprisonment and beating of ex-premier Yulia Tymoshenko that has caused quite a stir internationally with some world leaders (such as Germany's Prime Minister) threatening to boycott games played in the Ukraine. The politics have even taken a dangerous turn with an attack in the city of Dnipropetrovsk (not a city that will host the competition) injuring 26 people. Something not lost on the nations competing as only 3 countries have adopted Ukraine as their residence for the duration of the tournament.

The country's soccer team is also hoping things will work out when the tournament begins as they are a group of young unproven players led by aging stars who aren't what they used to be. Ukraine's team is coached by Oleh Blokhin, previous winner of the Ballon d'Or (awarded to the best football player in Europe) as a player. Blohkin coached Ukraine in their only other appearance at a major competition (the World Cup in 2006) and will hope to bring that experience to lead his country to a surprise quarter-final berth.

The Impact of 3D on Hollywood

Hollywood has always been about money. Studios won’t greenlight a new project unless they’re certain it’ll return them a profit. It hasn’t been very long since we were introduced to 3D, but look at how popular it has become. Looking back and beginning with Chicken Little in 2005 – Disney’s first 3D movie – it would be hard to find an animated movie being produced in America that wasn’t being released in 3D. In terms of live-action films, 3D has generated immense popularity only recently, after Avatar succeeded on so many different levels and became the highest grossing film of all time.

However, I’m concerned about Hollywood’s future intentions with 3D. Now that it has proven to be able to generate greater financial cash flows for studios, an increased amount of focus is being directed towards how studios can make the most money, without much care for the movies that viewers want adapted. Who honestly wanted to see a sequel to Clash of the Titans? The first movie received very poor critiques, as it should have. Yet it made a profit, mainly because 3D had recently become popular (with Avatar) and the studio knew that the 3D option would attract other viewers. Wrath of the Titans got equally crap reviews, but luckily for the studio, the international impact helped the film generate a profit.

Playoff Awards: Second Edition

Enough time has passed since part one of this award gimmick (part two would have been up sooner, but life and summer got in the way), meaning that its time to hand out some more awards! You will notice one glaring omission, but don't worry, I will explain myself at the end. Without further delay, on to the awards!

I always defend like this!

'The Dick Bavetta Award' - Usually reserved for the single, worst ref in these playoffs, this year however, every NBA ref gets it, a team effort baby! So why is it a team award? Let's run through a checklist: Inconsistent calls? Check. Bad calls? Check. Calls where multiple players start laughing in disbelief? Check. Really bad interpretations of flagrant fouls and technical fouls? Check (we are not done talking about those yet). It amazes me that we are in the year 2012, and the NBA doesn't even have an idea to improve officiating (ignoring the problem does not help anyone in the long run). Hopefully, this will become a non-issue, but I doubt it.

Countdown To Euro 2012: 16 Days To Go - Greece

Greece

How'd they get here: Won qualifying Group F

Last Appearance: Euro 2008 (eliminated in the Group Stage)

Best Appearance: Euro 2004 (Champions)

Schedule:
                        June 8 vs Poland
                        June 12 vs Czech Republic
                        June 16 vs Russia

The Story:

It's hard to decide what's worse for Greece, the crippling economic crisis that has caused rioting in the streets and a fallout that is being felt throughout Europe or me ranking them last in this thing I made up last night. It's too hard to call so I'll just call them 1A and 1B, just kidding, this ranking is definitely #1 on the list of things Greece wishes it could turn around. However if you've ever seen any Disney sports movie you might realize that this is setting up quite nicely, "a team of underdogs join up to overcome all the odds lifting their country out of crisis at the same time they lift the trophy". So what are the odds we'll be watching 'Euro 2012: A Greek Odyssey' starring Emilio Estevez (he really needs the work) as the team's coach sometime in the future? In my opinion, not so good.

Countdown to Euro 2012 - An Introduction

Have we all recovered from Chelsea thrillingly parking the bus for 300 straight minutes en route to becoming the European club champions? Luckily for everyone but Chelsea fans (who might never stop celebrating this improbable championship run) we have another huge soccer event coming up in just 17 days. The event I'm talking about is of course Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine, UEFA's premier international competition where 16 nations (this number will rise to 24 starting with Euro 2016 in France simply so UEFA can make more money) compete to become Europe's best footballing nation. With the competition just 17 days away I thought it'd be a good idea to do a countdown to Euro 2012 with a new blog post each day leading up to the tournament.

Each blog post will be a team preview of each of the participating countries starting with the team I think has the least likely shot at winning followed by teams with better chances until June 7 (one day before the tournament starts) where I will write about the team I believe will win it all (spoiler alert: it will be Spain unless there's an injury). Why do this? For one it will give me an opportunity to write something about I like each day until the tournament starts but more importantly because my country's (Serbia) team didn't make the competition, this will give me an opportunity to learn about each country's squad and which ones will be fun to watch and which certainly won't (I'm looking at you Greece). Not having your country qualify does have benefits as you can watch the games from the outside simply cheering for your favourite player or for a good competitive game as opposed to being completely emotionally connected to your nation's performance. With that being said though, I would still immediately trade the passive outsider feel of watching the tournament for the slim chance at having Serbia win the trophy even with the sure emotional scarring that comes with being invested in any sport. Let's just move on before I start to get sad about how we couldn't beat Estonia even once in our qualifying group.

Hopefully these posts will be fun and entertaining reads as we learn more about the teams that will participate in this year's European Championship.

I'll leave you with the official song for Euro 2012, Endless Summer by Macy Gray Oceana.

Until tomorrow when the countdown begins with team #16!

Game of Thrones Season 2 Episode 8 - "The Prince of Winterfell"

If you plan to watch this episode, do not read the following article until you have watched it. Ok realistically I can’t stop you, but there are SPOILERS below. You have been warned.

Well that was kind of disappointing. For a series that has only 10 episodes per season, I don’t think it was that necessary to waste (it wasn’t a full waste, some scenes were still good) an episode on setting up the last two episodes of the season. Some scenes were necessary to carry on their respective stories, but overall the producers could have made a greater impact with the episode. For this review I will make a few comments about certain scenes that I enjoyed in this episode and then I will give a quick summary on where everyone is at this point.

2012 Champions League Final Preview

It was never supposed to end like this. On December 16, 2011 when UEFA held the draw for the knock-out stage of the 2011-2012 Champions League, every soccer fan worldwide immediately came to the same realization. We were going to get an El Clasico in the final. On May 19th we were going to get Messi vs Ronaldo, Guardiola vs Mourinho, Catalonia vs Spain. The greatest club competition in soccer was going to finish with the greatest rivalry in the sport between the (allegedly) two best club teams. It was going to be perfect. And yet it wasn’t. First, on April 17th Mario Gomez’ goal in the 90th minute gave Bayern Munich an unexpected victory over Real Madrid and then one day later Chelsea managed to upset Barcelona in the other semi-final with a Drogba goal that came very much against the run of play. However even after the first leg of both semis the public and the media wrote them off, calling them minor speed bumps on the inevitable collision course between Real and Barca. And with both second legs being played in Spain, it was hard to argue.

The State of the NBA Playoffs

With the first round of the NBA playoffs coming to an end and my finals pick obliterated (they still haven't found all the pieces); it seems like a good time to see where we stand so far. To make myself feel better about the horrible predictions I made, I have decided to hand out some fake awards; because nothing cheers me up more than this gimmick. The 'Requiem for a Dream' award is a prestigious honour given to a team that has endured the most painful and hard-to-watch ending to a season in any sport in quite some time. The Gladiator Award is specific to the NBA, and is given to a player who has had the best single-game performance of the first round. Lastly, the '2004 New York Yankees' Award, is again NBA specific, and as you can tell from its name, is awarded to the biggest choke (both team and coach) of the first round. Once I am finished dishing out awards, I will proceed to hopefully put up some better predictions for round two.

Both of these guys won an award, find out which ones.

The 'Requiem for a Dream' award goes to: Manchester United! (In case you missed the weekend’s final EPL match-day action, Man U lost their all-but-won 13th Premier League title when Man City came back from 2-1 down to QPR, scoring twice in stoppage time to win the game and the title). Here is the video, feel free to fast-forward to the 4:00 mark for the good stuff.

Yes, I am fully aware that the incredible finish to the EPL season has nothing to do with the NBA playoffs, but do yourself a favor and just watch the video linked above. The NBA equivalent to what happened to Manchester United, would be losing an eight-point lead with 15 seconds to play in a game 7. Had Liverpool lost the title the way that United did, I would still be missing. We would not be able to call ourselves a sports blog without, at the very least, mentioning the miracle of Manchester. The last day this year's EPL season will forever hold the honor of this award.

Game of Thrones Season 2 Episode 7 - "A Man Without Honour"

If you plan to watch this episode, do not read the following article until you have watched it. Ok realistically I can’t stop you, but there are SPOILERS below. You have been warned.

“A Man Without Honour” was the best episode so far of the second season and the last 15 minutes were the best stretch of 15 minutes in the entire series.

After Theon fails in his search for Bran and Rickon around Winterfell, he ends up in nearby farm where one of his men finds walnut shells (maybe from Rickon’s walnuts as seen earlier in the episode). At the end of the episode, Theon reveals Winterfell two small brunt bodies hanging from ropes, resembling the two Stark boys to the people of Winterfell. Now I’m not certain that those bodies belong to Bran and Rickon, since Bran seemed reluctant to go to the farm (and he’s smart enough not to), but in case they are I confirm that Theon has completely lost it. I still don’t understand his motif is except to impress his father and sister, because everything he’s done after he took over Winterfell has been pretty retarded. I really wanted to research to see if Bran is still alive, but had to stop myself, because I don’t want to encounter any spoilers. Anyways, I hate Theon and I really hope that Bran has managed to escape.

Mad Men - 'Lady Lazarus' Review

Full Spoilers ahead for Season 5, episode 8 of Mad Men

More on this week's episode just after I taste some of this Cool Whip.

This week on Mad Men we got to see Don and Pete go further and further down the roads they've made for themselves this season with Don continuing to be the caring, loving, understanding husband (does anyone actually prefer Don when he's like this?) as opposed to Pete who's basically becoming Don of seasons 1-3. The episode started like a few others this season with Pete taking the train to work while talking to Howard (we finally get his name in this episode) about life in general but as per usual their conversation drifted towards adultery and the different ways Howard cheats on his wife, Beth (another name given to us this episode). Right after watching this opening scene, I thought that we would see some more shady behavior from Pete and I was right as Pete continued to cheat on Trudy (I'm still not sure why anyone would, has he seen Trudy?) later on in the episode.

The other main storyline of the episode involved Megan's resignation from the advertising business to continue to pursue her dream of becoming an actress. Before we got to this, we were treated to Megan receiving a mysterious phone call at work and then lying to both Don and Peggy in order to meet the director of some off-Broadway play she auditioned for. This gave us some good scenes between Peggy and Don, especially Peggy answering Don's phone call by yelling "Pizza House!" so she wouldn't have to lie to him. The extremely bad Asian accent she used made this one of the more random scenes of the episode but funny nonetheless. As this was going on we also met Howard's wife, Beth for the first time. She is waiting for Howard at the train station because she locked herself out of her car and right away you can tell that she is not happy with her marriage (much like Pete) and even knows about Howard's adulterous ways.

The Magic of Sports

Wuddup people!? I know I’ve been on a bit of a hiatus and haven’t written an article for quite some time but I’ve decided to try and get back in the blogging groove. I told Petar that I was planning on writing a short piece today to get back into the whole writing thing and his response was, “Sick. What are you gonna write about?” I realized I didn’t actually have any topic in mind so decide to do what I always do when I get stuck: I started watching TV with my grandpa and just loafted. I wasn’t coming up with any good ideas so I decided to just give up for the night and try again tomorrow. Naturally, 15 minutes ago I witnessed a moment of absolute brilliance and realized it was the perfect thing to write about. Here’s my take on the magic of sports.

First a backstory: My grandfather is probably the most pessimistic man on the face of the planet. He’s not actually a negative person, but when it comes to something he actually cares about, his philosophy is to assume the worst. That way he’s always either pleasantly surprised or he can go to bed saying that he knew it from the start. Growing up with this, my father also picked up this “hater” mentality and you will RARELY find him “hoping for the best.” This makes watching sports with these 2 absolutely brutal. If you were to listen to my grandpa watch the #1 tennis player in the world, Novak Djokovic, playing in the second round of a Grand Slam against some scrub with a triple digit ranking, you would think that our Serbian sports hero was getting slaughtered. When I come to the TV to see how things can be going so poorly, the scoreline usually reads 6-2, 5-1 for Djokovic. When you ask the man what the hell he was worried about, he says something ridiculous like, “yea, but he missed TWOOOO backhands already. TWOOOO.” I’d like to think that both my father and grandfather are academics and neither were around sports much while growing up, so it’s hard for them to understand the ways of a true competitor. Another side note relevant to my story is that both my dad and grandpa lived in New York City for 8 years while my dad was a teenager. Because of this, they are diehard fans of New York teams and claim that the Rangers, Giants and Knicks should play every primetime game from now until the apocalypse.

Game of Thrones Season 2 Episode 6 - "The Old Gods and the New"

If you plan to watch this episode, do not read the following article until you have watched it. Ok realistically I can’t stop you, but there are SPOILERS below. You have been warned.

As I said 3 episodes ago, Theon Greyjoy is a douche. In this episode he takes over Winterfell as he planned to, but without his sister and with few men. Bran obviously tells his people he’s yielding, since most of their men are south and Bran can’t do much (I mean he is a crippled boy). Theon doesn’t stop here and he decides to execute Ser Rodrik, which is completely idiotic. With Theon’s actions, Robb (arguably the best leader in terms of battles) wants to find him and kill him. Roose Bolton explains that his son can do that for him, since Robb can’t leave the war for King’s Landing. Theon has absolutely no way of surviving for long. He doesn’t seem good with fighting, he doesn’t have many people backing him up (even the people of Pyke laugh at him), and he seem to have gone insane (especially while executing Rodrik). This isn’t exactly the formula for success during a battle. I also don’t think his sister will send the troops he asked her to send, because the rest of his family seems to have little respect for him. I mean who should have respect for him? He’s almost as hated as Joffrey in my books. These series of events confirm Bran’s ability to see the future in his dreams, as the sea (Theon’s people from the sea) flooded the castle and Rodrik was one of the people who drowned. One character that gained a lot of respect from me this episode is Osha. She sleeps with Theon to distract him and sneaks out while Bran, his little brother and Luwin (giant) get ready to leave. A guard comes in her way but she seduces him and cuts his neck. She whistles to the trio plus the two wolves that the coast is clear for them to escape. She definitely cares for Bran and offers to help him in these terrible times for Winterfell. The biggest problem now is…there are no Starks in Winterfell.

Marvel’s The Avengers Review: The Superhero of Movies in 2012

After countless clips, TV spots, and featurettes, The Avengers is finally in theaters and after looking at the first day numbers, it’s on its way to becoming the highest grossing superhero movie of all time (until The Dark Knight Rises?). There has never been a movie that had four separate prequels, all from different franchises. Marvel tied in The Avengers to each of these films and finally put them together to create not just what will become the highest grossing superhero movie of all time, but one of the best as well. The Avengers works on many levels and it’s led by its strong cast and excellent action scenes. Joss Whedon does a great job as the director and hopefully he will return to direct the inevitable sequel to The Avengers.

The film begins with Loki (Thor’s “adopted” brother) making a deal with an alien race called the Chitauri. Loki promises to provide them with the Tesseract (a powerful cosmic cube capable of providing unlimited sustainable energy) in exchange for power to rule the inhabitants of Earth. Not everyone who will watch The Avengers will have seen the prequels (judging by the box office numbers), and there may be some plot points that won’t be clear right away to those people, but the movie introduces each character well and gives some insight into their past. Captain America is shown struggling to leave his past behind; Tony Stark is as typical as he was in the first two Iron Man films; Bruce Banner is hiding in Brazil in an attempt to avoid S.H.I.E.L.D. One thing that wasn’t explained very well was Thor’s return to Earth. In his respective film, Thor destroys the Bifröst and the portal back to Earth. In The Avengers, he appears out of nowhere and it leaves the audience wondering how he managed to return. Loki only quickly mentions it and some people may miss it and be left without an explanation. It’s a minor annoyance for me and doesn’t do anything to negatively impact the film, but it is an important plot development that should have been addressed in more detail. Overall, the film succeeds on a character level because it does not solely focus on bring together the Avengers and having them battle against Loki, but rather focuses on developing their relationships as they struggle to gain trust and fight alongside each other.

One character who had little time for development was Hawkeye and it’s unfortunate because he’s yet to have his own film and has had no past introduction (aside from a cameo in Thor). He spends more than half the film under Loki’s control and does not have time to develop afterwards. Black Widow (played by Scarlett Johansson) gives a few details on his past throughout the film, but aside from this, all we know about Hawkeye after watching the film is that he can pretty much shoot his target blindfolded. Black Widow on the other hand is given a lot more screen time and has a much larger role than in Iron Man 2. The character obviously cannot compete with the superheroes, but she’s a good addition to the team and we get to witness her excellent abilities as a spy. Marvel may attempt to do a spin-off; however, given her lack of actual superhero abilities, it will be interesting to see how she does with a film just for herself and which “villains” she’ll be fighting.

The film ends with an all-out brawl between the Avengers and the Chitauri. The entire sequence is shot extremely well and each character gets their fair share of kills. However, it is somewhat unreasonable that the Chitauri can be killed by a single gunshot. The power of their weapons make up for their lack of strength, but considering the circumstances (the Chitauri are making a deal with a “god” and threaten to kill him), it would have made sense for them to have been stronger and more resilient to human gunfire.

Joss Whedon does a great job with The Avengers and it’s an accomplishment considering he’s only directed one film previously (Serenity) that no one has probably even heard about. Marvel hasn’t been giving their films to popular big-name directors, which has allowed these less experienced directors to showcase their talent, such as Iron Man and Jon Favreau; Thor and Kenneth Branagh; Captain America and Joe Johnston. All of the Marvel films have had different styles of directing, but they’ve all been good in their own way. Marvel put a lot of faith in Whedon by giving him one of the biggest films of all time, but the risk has paid off. People have acknowledged the job Whedon has done, and the film is making tons of money (this is due to the insane amount of marketing and hype). The Avengers was also well-scripted, and the moments of humor were well spread out. In terms of the score, the film doesn’t do much, as the main theme is heard only twice or thrice for only a short period, and all the other pieces are forgettable. Hopefully an effort will be made to improve the score in the sequel.

The Avengers is a must-see-in-theaters film, and not only because of the explosive action scenes, but because of the 3D. Like Thor and Captain America, The Avengers was post-converted into 3D after filming had finished. However, the post-converted result was more closely related to Thor, with only a few lapses and a greater overall experience. My complaint with Captain America is that you could tell the conversion process was hurried, as the 3D was blurry in many instances and worsened the film. You could wait to see The Avengers when it eventually gets released on TV or you could download it illegally (as thousands of people are undoubtedly doing), but if there was ever a reason to spend money on seeing a film in theaters, it should be for a film like The Avengers. It’s an experience you do not want to miss, and I urge you to check it out as soon as possible. The Avengers instantly ranks as one of the best superhero/comic book films of all time, and it’s only a matter of time until production begins on a second film.

Score: 9.5/10

The Interesting Case of the NHL

A quick glance through our posts would tell anyone that, not much has been written about hockey on this blog (read: nothing). This is not because we don't watch, or dislike the sport, it's simply because we don't know hockey to the extent that we know basketball (and a few other topics). That is, when I discuss the NBA, I have a good idea of what is true and what isn't, how to properly analyze a player, and break down basic plays. I cannot do those things with hockey, at least not yet. What I can do however, is examine the sport on a broad scale and point out three things that make playoff hockey unique relative to other sports.

# 1 Momentum and Seeding

Currently we have the # 8 seeded L.A. Kings up 3-0 on the # 2 St. Louis Blues in the Western semi-finals. A couple of thoughts here. I love how the NHL re-seeds teams after round one, this makes the regular season mean more in terms of rewarding teams that played well throughout the year. It ensures that the high-seeds will get the easiest (in theory) possible path to the Stanley Cup finals, while also (again, in theory) making sure that we get the best match-ups in the conference finals. Of course, the Capitals of Washington and the Kings from the city of angels made all of that a moot point by upsetting the # 2 Boston Bruins, and # 1 Vancouver Canucks respectively, a feat even more impressive when you consider that the Bruins and Canucks were last year's Stanley Cup finalists. In any other sport, it is very rare for the top seeds to be eliminated so early. In hockey, we almost had every low seed win in the first round! Only the Rangers, who were pushed to game 7, saved that from happening. Another thing that rarely happens in other sports (baseball being the only other sport) that happens (at least more regularly) in Hockey is the 3-0 series comebacks. It is at the point where, once Pittsburgh won Game 5, Philadelphia fans were legitimately scared of blowing the series. No other sport can offer that kind of drama, where no lead is safe (although the NBA did its best with the Clippers and Memphis game).

Game of Thrones Season 2 Episode 5 - "The Ghost of Harrenhal"

If you plan to watch this episode, do not read the following article until you have watched it. Ok realistically I can’t stop you, but there are SPOILERS below. You have been warned.

This episode wastes no time getting right into the action. Renly is found talking to Catelyn and out of nowhere the shadow child that Melisandre produced creeps up behind him and stabs him. I almost paused the scene to take in what just happened. This is a huge death that will cause Stannis to control all of Renly’s army (the largest army) and have the upper hand to gain the crown. This shadow that Melisandre (maybe Stannis too) controls is basically like cheating, since I see no way of it ever being destroyed, thus there being no way for Stannis to lose. From here on out I think Stannis will be leading his army to King’s Landing and will take over the throne. After that, one of two things can happen, either he becomes king (hopefully this is good for our friends from Winterfell) or Melisandre instructs the shadow to kill Stannis and she becomes the leader and attempts to convert everyone to witchism. Then again this is the Game of Thrones so I likely have no idea what I’m talking about. The CGI for the shadow is very well done, but I don’t like that fact that we know very little about this shadow. Hopefully the show will give us some background in the next few episodes. As a cause of this death, Brienne (who completely destroys two guards) and Catelyn runaway from Renyl’s people and Brienne offers to serve Carelyn. I thought this scene was really well done, as you could feel the emotions of both characters. Brienne is becoming a very cool character and may help out the northerners, who are under attack from the Greyjoy family.

The news travels to King’s Landing where the Lannister family tension continues. Cersei claims that Joffrey has a plan against the future attack, so Tyrion decides to keep black-mailing Loras to find out what the plan is. Apparently, the plan is to throw bowls of wildfire, which can burn through almost anything, at the intruders. Tyrion commands the Pyromancer to stop making the wildfire for Cersei (over 7000 jars already made) and starts making it for him. I don’t really know what Tyrion could be planning here. Could he be using it as a threat against Joffrey? I mean even the whole plan of using wildfire seems like, as Bronn put it, “a shit idea” to me, especially when they see that they’re dealing with a shadow. However, there is no need to ever doubt Tyrion, since he always knows what he’s doing.

The story with Daenerys progresses much more this episode. Last we left the Dothraki and their Khaleesi they were welcomed (not so kindly) to the city of Qarth. We finally get a look inside Qarth and it really is a beautiful and wealthy place. She gets invited to a welcome party hosted by Xaro (the guy who let her into Qarth) which causes many events to happen. First we see the dragons (maybe they heard that we wanted to see them!), then her Dothraki crew tried to steal a golden statue (hilarious scene), a weird old man pulled of Tien Shinhan’s (from dragon ball z) multi-form move, a woman who’s face is covered in gold (very creepy) tells Ser Jorah to watch for Daenerys, and Xaro asks Daenerys to marry him. Wait, he’s already proposing and they’ve just met, I mean it’s ok because he’s offering her some gold right? Anyways he says that she can keep half the gold in this secret vault and that he will help her regain power to the throne if they marry. He also claims that Ser Jorah is in love with her, which Daenerys denies. Later on Daenerys talks about the new plan with Ser Jorah, but he rejects it and says he will get her a ship and a captain. What would you do in this situation if you were Daenerys? On one hand, Xaro will probably help you a lot in your quest to the throne, but the downside is the marriage, since she never gets to choose who she marries and someone who has power and beauty like her should be able to choose whoever she wants. Ser Jorah might be telling you the best advice, but maybe Xaro is right and Ser Jorah is actually in love with Daenerys and is only doing this to keep her from marrying Xaro. Difficult situation the mother of dragons has gotten herself into, but hopefully she makes the correct choice.

In other areas of the world, the Knight’s Watch has progressed further beyond the wall and Jon Snow has become a temporary ranger. Bran’s dreams might actually be an ability to see into the future. Arya has started serving under Tywin, which set up some good dialogue between the two. She encounters one of the prisoners she freed in the previous episode (Jaqen H'ghar) and he promises to kill any three people who she names, because she “stole” three deaths from the Red God by letting the three prisoners go. She first names the torturer (who gets killed at the end of the episode) and my guess for the next two names would be Cersei and Joffrey.

I’m going to be adding a new segment to my articles called…the Tyrion Quote of the Episode! This week’s quote:
“Being repeatedly humiliated by Robb Stark is time consuming”

And that ends this week’s review. Hope you enjoyed the episode (I really did) and my review, until next time.
