June 2012 Movie Preview

June 1st

Snow White and the Huntsman – A dark twist on a classic children’s fairytale, Snow White gets help from the Huntsman in this one in her attempt to overthrow the Queen. It is anticipated to fair better than the other Snow White film released earlier this year (Mirror Mirror) and is led by Twilight star Kristin Stewart and the God of Thunder, Chris Hemsworth.

Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted – The third installment in this animated series looks to be the worst one yet, with the animals being chased once again, but this time in Europe. The jokes seem played out and even though the film may not live up to the previous two, it’s bound to do well at the box office given its 3D upgrade, even though it’s going up against the must-see film of the month, Prometheus.

Prometheus – Up until a few months ago, people could only speculate what Prometheus was about. We’ve gotten more than enough information now to know that it is not a prequel to Ridley Scott’s Alien, but it does take place in a similar setting (and there are aliens involved). If you’re into science fiction, you’re in for a treat because Prometheus is shaping out to become one of the best science fiction movies in a long time (even though they are rarely made anymore – unless it’s an alien invasion).

Rock of Ages – Musicals aren’t always box office hits, but Rock of Ages has been popular long enough to help the film perform decently at the box office. It also has a pretty good line up of actors, including Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin and Catherine Zeta-Jones (even though this line up may not be favourable in attracting younger viewers), but that doesn’t mean it’ll be a good film or will be positively received by critics.

That’s My Boy – Another Adam Sandler film that will probably be in the bad to satisfactory range. It doesn’t look any better than any of his recent films.

June 22nd

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter – The only thing I know about this film is that it stays true to its title. I haven’t seen any trailers, nor do I plan to, but if I’m in the mood for a horror flick, I may give it a watch.

Brave – Pixar finally seems to be getting back on track with Brave. After their last mishap (Cars 2), the worst Pixar film to date, they’re making an original film about a Scottish princess who must rely on her bravery in order to undo a terrible curse. Pixar will be going back to focusing on sequels/prequels after Brave, with Monsters University scheduled for release sometime next year and I’m hopeful they’re still considering making a sequel to The Incredibles.

June 29th

Ted – From the creator of Family Guy and American dad, this extremely inappropriate, but funny film will no doubt be popular among the same crowd that helped Pineapple Express perform decently at the box office. It's targeted towards the younger generation who will no doubt find a way to sneak in to this R-rated comedy to get some good laughs.

There’s also another Tyler Perry film being released that’s bound to do decent business in its first weekend and drop off afterwards.

I left Piranha 3DD off this list because I doubt it can make any noise at the box office. When your lead actor is the Hoff and your other characters have lines such as “Bring me my leg”, don’t expect to attract a large audience.

Is there a film missing? Oh yeah, G.I. Joe: Retaliation was recently pushed back from June of this year all the way to March of next year just so that Paramount could show us Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson pop out of the screen.

If you thought June had enough good films, just wait until July. The Spider-Man reboot is being released, as is the much-anticipated sequel to the 2008 blockbuster The Dark Knight.
