Game of Thrones Season 2 Episode 7 - "A Man Without Honour"

If you plan to watch this episode, do not read the following article until you have watched it. Ok realistically I can’t stop you, but there are SPOILERS below. You have been warned.

“A Man Without Honour” was the best episode so far of the second season and the last 15 minutes were the best stretch of 15 minutes in the entire series.

After Theon fails in his search for Bran and Rickon around Winterfell, he ends up in nearby farm where one of his men finds walnut shells (maybe from Rickon’s walnuts as seen earlier in the episode). At the end of the episode, Theon reveals Winterfell two small brunt bodies hanging from ropes, resembling the two Stark boys to the people of Winterfell. Now I’m not certain that those bodies belong to Bran and Rickon, since Bran seemed reluctant to go to the farm (and he’s smart enough not to), but in case they are I confirm that Theon has completely lost it. I still don’t understand his motif is except to impress his father and sister, because everything he’s done after he took over Winterfell has been pretty retarded. I really wanted to research to see if Bran is still alive, but had to stop myself, because I don’t want to encounter any spoilers. Anyways, I hate Theon and I really hope that Bran has managed to escape.

Daenerys’ story in Qarth just got even crazier in this episode. After finding out her dragons were stolen last episode, she tries to do anything to get her babies back. Ser Jorah returns from his attempt to find Daenerys some ships and she orders him to prove his trust by finding her dragons. The creepy woman with the mask tells Jorah that Daenerys is currently with the one who stole her dragons after Jorah tells the woman that he won’t betray Daenerys again. So he betrayed her before? Interesting stuff here because I don’t think I remember him betraying her. The woman also exposes that he is in love with Daenerys, just as Xaro had mentioned a few episodes ago. Daenerys is holding a meeting with the 13 of Qarth in order to see who stole the dragons. The guy from the House of the Undying says that he took her dragons and is keeping him safe because he made a deal with the “King of Qarth”. This “King” turns out to be Xaro, because shortly after, all the replicates (they all look the same) of the undying guy slit the throats of the rest of the 13 of Qarth. Daenerys narrowly escapes after Ser Jorah fails at killing the undying guy, because let’s face it…he can’t die. Now it looks like Daenerys has to go to the house of the undying and probably marry Xaro to get her dragons back. She needs to trust Ser Jorah from now on, because I believe he knows what the right thing to do is. Also, what happened to all this power Daenerys had? After Kahl Drogo died she really hasn’t been able to have much control over anyone. All I know is that she’s going to have a hard time getting to the Iron Throne with the way everything has happened in Qarth so far.

After a long hiatus, Jaime finally makes an appearance and it sure was a good one. Robb puts Jaime’s cousin (Alton) into the same cellar as Jaime, after he gives him Cersei’s message. Jaime and his cousin reminisce about their times as squires, but then Jaime tells him he has to die in order for an escape to occur. After Jaime beats the crap out of his cousin, he strangles a guard and manages to escape, only to be caught again shortly after. Lady Stark stops the guard’s father from cutting off Jaime’s head (what’s with Lannisters and Starks saving each other?) and throws Jaime back into the cellar. Catelyn talks to Jaime about him having no honour and Jaime retaliates with some logic, claiming that he was honourable by having only slept with one woman (Cersei), while her deceased husband slept with another (Jon’s mother) making him dishonourable. Catelyn takes Brienne’s sword and the scene ends there. Jaime is in deep shit (well he is shitting himself technically) right now, because there really is no way that he escapes this. I don’t think Lady Stark cutting off his head would be a good idea, because they still need him as a bargaining tool, so I’m not sure what she has planned to do with him. Jaime is actually really similar to his father in the sense that he’s good with his words and will win his arguments with logic, but that can’t save him now can it?

In King’s Landing Cersei reveals to Tyrion that Joffrey’s father is indeed Jaime (Jaime and Cersei both seem more open about it now) and she worries that Joffrey’s madness is the price she has to pay for her sins. Sansa has gotten her period, meaning that Joffrey can make babies with her, although he doesn’t seem to enjoy women, but rather he enjoys pain. Meanwhile beyond the Wall, Ygritte teases Jon for being a virgin and questions his choice of become part of the Knight’s Watch. I really enjoy their scenes together because I find the attraction between the two really interesting (you can tell Ygritte likes Jon, even though she’s trying to escape). Ygritte ends up running away, but when Jon catches up to her, he is cornered by many wildlings. In Harrenhal, Tywin and Arya display some great dialogue again (probably the best 1 on 1 interaction in the show, my faviourite for sure), but this time Arya has thoughts of killing Tywin.

The Tyrion quote of the episode (sadly there wasn’t much to choose from):
“It's hard to put a leash on a dog once you've put a crown on his head”

Well now we have a lot to look forward to for next week’s episode with all the cliffhangers that we’ve been left with. I’m still somewhat mad that there aren’t enough scenes with Tyrion, but that’s because they had to develop other parts of the story.

Episode rating: 9.3
