Playoff Awards: Second Edition

Enough time has passed since part one of this award gimmick (part two would have been up sooner, but life and summer got in the way), meaning that its time to hand out some more awards! You will notice one glaring omission, but don't worry, I will explain myself at the end. Without further delay, on to the awards!

I always defend like this!

'The Dick Bavetta Award' - Usually reserved for the single, worst ref in these playoffs, this year however, every NBA ref gets it, a team effort baby! So why is it a team award? Let's run through a checklist: Inconsistent calls? Check. Bad calls? Check. Calls where multiple players start laughing in disbelief? Check. Really bad interpretations of flagrant fouls and technical fouls? Check (we are not done talking about those yet). It amazes me that we are in the year 2012, and the NBA doesn't even have an idea to improve officiating (ignoring the problem does not help anyone in the long run). Hopefully, this will become a non-issue, but I doubt it.

Now, quick tangent. The NBA rightfully suspended both Dexter Pittman (3) and Udonis Haslem (1) for their incredibly dirty fouls. Haslem came out with the "I've been in this league for a long time" defense, and claims he was making a play on the ball. Suuuuure you did Udonis, you are recognized for always contesting shots by swinging both your arms down and away from the ball. Tim Legler of ESPN rightfully called out Haslem for this B.S. ("We have replay! we see that you did not go for the ball!"). But what Haslem did is nothing compared to what Pittman did. Let's have a look (near the end of the video).

Pittman does not even look at the ball and goes out of his way to try and injure Stephenson. This is equivalent to what Metta World Peace did to James Harden (if you disagree with this, you are clearly a Heat homer). It was just a terrible play, meant to injure a guy who flashed the 'choke' sign, speaking of which.

'The Bret Favre Award' for the most over-blown, media driven story that should be a non-story easily goes to the aforementioned 'choke' sign. For some reason, the Miami Heat are letting a fourth string guard get into their heads. Kinda sucks when you see other players try and show you up doesn't it Lebron? Oh wait, Lebron is the same guy who river-danced in-front of the Bulls, and spent an entire game talking to the Cavs bench on his return home. Didn't Wade also participate in making fun of Dirk Nowitzki's illness in last year's playoffs? It's a two-way street guys, ESPN should be careful, I hear Eddy Curry is planning to tackle the next media member who calls Lebron a choker again.

While we are talking about the Miami Heat, let's go ahead and give them the 'Harvey Dent Award'. Remember that great quote in the Dark Knight: "You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain"? Well, the Heat have fully embraced that role now. From dirty fouls, to getting sucked in to Indiana's silly (and I am looking at you Danny Granger) tactics, Miami has finally embraced the fact that nobody likes them. Having said all that, I applaud the great Larry Bird who absolutely let his team have it, calling them soft and accusing them of not showing up to play. For all of Miami's antics, Indiana's are  just as bad.

'The Mike Brown Award', given to the coach who made the worst decision of the playoffs so far, goes to...Mike Brown! With his season on the line, Mike Brown decided to sit his best player (an on-fire Kobe Bryant) to start the fourth quarter. His counterpart Scott Brooks put out his best possible line-up and went for the kill. Do I even have to tell you what happened next? Mike Brown burned a time-out just 57 seconds into the quarter, then another one a minute later and his team trailing by 16 points. Thanks for coming out Mike.

'The Last Stand Award': Boston Celtics, no further explanation needed.

You have probably by now realized that the omission I mentioned at the start of this post has got to be the Spurs of San Antonio. The reason that they have not received any fake awards from me is because I am doing them one better. They will get an entire post, purely about them. Look for it coming soon, cheers.
