Game of Thrones Season 2 Episode 10 - Valar Morghulis

If you plan to watch this episode, do not read the following article until you have watched it. Ok realistically I can’t stop you, but there are SPOILERS below. You have been warned.

Cliffhanger alert! Zombies attacking the Wall, I repeat, zombies attacking the Wall. What a great finale this was to an awesome season of Game of Thrones. Every story has a twist in it that will make all Game of Thrones fans wait impatiently until next year’s release of the third season. If only I could click the fast forward button (or read the books, but after this finale I’m kind of hesitant to do so, because it is so well done…maybe I’ll read the first 2 only).

Game of Thrones Season 2 Episode 7 - "A Man Without Honour"

If you plan to watch this episode, do not read the following article until you have watched it. Ok realistically I can’t stop you, but there are SPOILERS below. You have been warned.

“A Man Without Honour” was the best episode so far of the second season and the last 15 minutes were the best stretch of 15 minutes in the entire series.

After Theon fails in his search for Bran and Rickon around Winterfell, he ends up in nearby farm where one of his men finds walnut shells (maybe from Rickon’s walnuts as seen earlier in the episode). At the end of the episode, Theon reveals Winterfell two small brunt bodies hanging from ropes, resembling the two Stark boys to the people of Winterfell. Now I’m not certain that those bodies belong to Bran and Rickon, since Bran seemed reluctant to go to the farm (and he’s smart enough not to), but in case they are I confirm that Theon has completely lost it. I still don’t understand his motif is except to impress his father and sister, because everything he’s done after he took over Winterfell has been pretty retarded. I really wanted to research to see if Bran is still alive, but had to stop myself, because I don’t want to encounter any spoilers. Anyways, I hate Theon and I really hope that Bran has managed to escape.

Game of Thrones Season 2 Episode 6 - "The Old Gods and the New"

If you plan to watch this episode, do not read the following article until you have watched it. Ok realistically I can’t stop you, but there are SPOILERS below. You have been warned.

As I said 3 episodes ago, Theon Greyjoy is a douche. In this episode he takes over Winterfell as he planned to, but without his sister and with few men. Bran obviously tells his people he’s yielding, since most of their men are south and Bran can’t do much (I mean he is a crippled boy). Theon doesn’t stop here and he decides to execute Ser Rodrik, which is completely idiotic. With Theon’s actions, Robb (arguably the best leader in terms of battles) wants to find him and kill him. Roose Bolton explains that his son can do that for him, since Robb can’t leave the war for King’s Landing. Theon has absolutely no way of surviving for long. He doesn’t seem good with fighting, he doesn’t have many people backing him up (even the people of Pyke laugh at him), and he seem to have gone insane (especially while executing Rodrik). This isn’t exactly the formula for success during a battle. I also don’t think his sister will send the troops he asked her to send, because the rest of his family seems to have little respect for him. I mean who should have respect for him? He’s almost as hated as Joffrey in my books. These series of events confirm Bran’s ability to see the future in his dreams, as the sea (Theon’s people from the sea) flooded the castle and Rodrik was one of the people who drowned. One character that gained a lot of respect from me this episode is Osha. She sleeps with Theon to distract him and sneaks out while Bran, his little brother and Luwin (giant) get ready to leave. A guard comes in her way but she seduces him and cuts his neck. She whistles to the trio plus the two wolves that the coast is clear for them to escape. She definitely cares for Bran and offers to help him in these terrible times for Winterfell. The biggest problem now is…there are no Starks in Winterfell.

Game of Thrones Season 2 Episode 5 - "The Ghost of Harrenhal"

If you plan to watch this episode, do not read the following article until you have watched it. Ok realistically I can’t stop you, but there are SPOILERS below. You have been warned.

This episode wastes no time getting right into the action. Renly is found talking to Catelyn and out of nowhere the shadow child that Melisandre produced creeps up behind him and stabs him. I almost paused the scene to take in what just happened. This is a huge death that will cause Stannis to control all of Renly’s army (the largest army) and have the upper hand to gain the crown. This shadow that Melisandre (maybe Stannis too) controls is basically like cheating, since I see no way of it ever being destroyed, thus there being no way for Stannis to lose. From here on out I think Stannis will be leading his army to King’s Landing and will take over the throne. After that, one of two things can happen, either he becomes king (hopefully this is good for our friends from Winterfell) or Melisandre instructs the shadow to kill Stannis and she becomes the leader and attempts to convert everyone to witchism. Then again this is the Game of Thrones so I likely have no idea what I’m talking about. The CGI for the shadow is very well done, but I don’t like that fact that we know very little about this shadow. Hopefully the show will give us some background in the next few episodes. As a cause of this death, Brienne (who completely destroys two guards) and Catelyn runaway from Renyl’s people and Brienne offers to serve Carelyn. I thought this scene was really well done, as you could feel the emotions of both characters. Brienne is becoming a very cool character and may help out the northerners, who are under attack from the Greyjoy family.

The news travels to King’s Landing where the Lannister family tension continues. Cersei claims that Joffrey has a plan against the future attack, so Tyrion decides to keep black-mailing Loras to find out what the plan is. Apparently, the plan is to throw bowls of wildfire, which can burn through almost anything, at the intruders. Tyrion commands the Pyromancer to stop making the wildfire for Cersei (over 7000 jars already made) and starts making it for him. I don’t really know what Tyrion could be planning here. Could he be using it as a threat against Joffrey? I mean even the whole plan of using wildfire seems like, as Bronn put it, “a shit idea” to me, especially when they see that they’re dealing with a shadow. However, there is no need to ever doubt Tyrion, since he always knows what he’s doing.

The story with Daenerys progresses much more this episode. Last we left the Dothraki and their Khaleesi they were welcomed (not so kindly) to the city of Qarth. We finally get a look inside Qarth and it really is a beautiful and wealthy place. She gets invited to a welcome party hosted by Xaro (the guy who let her into Qarth) which causes many events to happen. First we see the dragons (maybe they heard that we wanted to see them!), then her Dothraki crew tried to steal a golden statue (hilarious scene), a weird old man pulled of Tien Shinhan’s (from dragon ball z) multi-form move, a woman who’s face is covered in gold (very creepy) tells Ser Jorah to watch for Daenerys, and Xaro asks Daenerys to marry him. Wait, he’s already proposing and they’ve just met, I mean it’s ok because he’s offering her some gold right? Anyways he says that she can keep half the gold in this secret vault and that he will help her regain power to the throne if they marry. He also claims that Ser Jorah is in love with her, which Daenerys denies. Later on Daenerys talks about the new plan with Ser Jorah, but he rejects it and says he will get her a ship and a captain. What would you do in this situation if you were Daenerys? On one hand, Xaro will probably help you a lot in your quest to the throne, but the downside is the marriage, since she never gets to choose who she marries and someone who has power and beauty like her should be able to choose whoever she wants. Ser Jorah might be telling you the best advice, but maybe Xaro is right and Ser Jorah is actually in love with Daenerys and is only doing this to keep her from marrying Xaro. Difficult situation the mother of dragons has gotten herself into, but hopefully she makes the correct choice.

In other areas of the world, the Knight’s Watch has progressed further beyond the wall and Jon Snow has become a temporary ranger. Bran’s dreams might actually be an ability to see into the future. Arya has started serving under Tywin, which set up some good dialogue between the two. She encounters one of the prisoners she freed in the previous episode (Jaqen H'ghar) and he promises to kill any three people who she names, because she “stole” three deaths from the Red God by letting the three prisoners go. She first names the torturer (who gets killed at the end of the episode) and my guess for the next two names would be Cersei and Joffrey.

I’m going to be adding a new segment to my articles called…the Tyrion Quote of the Episode! This week’s quote:
“Being repeatedly humiliated by Robb Stark is time consuming”

And that ends this week’s review. Hope you enjoyed the episode (I really did) and my review, until next time.

Game of Thrones Season 2 Episode 4 - "Garden of Bones"

If you plan to watch this episode, do not read the following article until you have watched it. Ok realistically I can’t stop you, but there are SPOILERS below. You have been warned.

Alright what the fuck was that at the end there? First of all how did Melisandre manage to become 9 months pregnant in maybe 1 month (there’s no way 9 months passed, because winter would have come and gone)? Some crazy voodoo witch shit going on over there. More important, what did she give birth to? I knew the show was a fantasy with the dragons and such, but this spirit or whatever it was just brought this fantasy to a whole new level. I can’t imagine what was going through Ser Davos’ mind as he was watching her give birth. It was probably something like.. “ooo Melisandre is getting naked, wait she’s pregnant? Is that even possible? Ok typical preggo screaming… this light is getting brighter and moving toward her, WTFFFFF is that shadow spirit thing?”. Also how did her stomach get so large if she was carrying a shadow? Alright enough about that, but I can’t wait for the next episode to explain wtf was going on there. At least Stannis has a son (I guess) now. Speaking of Stannis, I found it interesting how him and Renly have some serious hatred toward each other. It looks like both of them will be fighting each other as well as fighting against Joffrey.

Game of Thrones Season 2 Episode 1 - 'The North Remembers' Review

As with the Mad Men and Breaking Bad reviews there are SPOILERS below. You have been warned.

Winter is coming!! Well not really since it just passed, but Game of Thrones season 2 is here! As I opened up the new Game of Thrones episode on my computer yesterday (sadly I couldn’t watch it on Sunday due to an exam on Monday) I heard the first few notes of the amazing opening theme song and instantly got goosebumps and flashbacks to the first season (which I finished in about a week, indicating my addiction to the series). This season takes place right after the execution of Eddard Stark and the progress of his son, Robb, southward to show the Lannisters (who are now at the head of the throne) not to mess with the Stark family.

There is no time wasted in delivering some action (the only fight of the episode) as we see Hound brutally destroy another man for the pleasure of Joffrey on his name day. Joffrey acts like a prick to the next contender, making him chug wine, until Sansa tells Joffrey to stop. Tyrion enters the scene and makes fun of his nephew in his usually witty fashion and randomly leaves. So far so good, these are the typical things I was expecting from this season. Next, Tyrion breaks up a council meeting between Cersei the other members of the council, which results in some good dialogue between the siblings, highlighted by Tyrion comically saying “It is your one redeeming quality, that and your cheek bones”. This scene indicates that there seems to be some tension in the Lannister family, especially the indirect tension between grandfather Tywin and grandson Joffrey.

The scene shifts up North and we get our first look at Bran as the temporary King of the North. Nothing really interesting here, but there is a new element added to the series in the following segment which involves a 1st person (or wolf should I say) view from the eyes of Bran’s wolf. I found this awesome and I can see how it could make for some great scenes in the future. There is also a red streak in the sky which persists for the next few scenes, signifying the birth of dragons.

Speaking of dragons, we finally get to see the beautiful Daenerys and her newly born dragons, except since the death of Khal Drogo, she and her crew seem to have been struggling. Daenerys and Ser Jorah Mormont (he’s got the coolest voice in the show) talk for a bit and Daenerys decides to send 3 of her men in different directions to find out where the group should go. She talks with one of the Dothraki men before he departs and they both mention “blood of my blood”. I’m not sure if this is Khal Drogo’s brother or if all Dothraki are “blood of blood” (I really don’t want to research anything because the internet and the subway for that matter are spoiler infested).

Now we venture beyond the wall as the men of the Night’s Watch have entered a small village owned by a man, Craster, who has sex with his wives, daughters, their daughters and just keeps producing more daughters to bang…really sickening stuff (nerd thought: how many genetic problems must there be in this village?). Jon Snow speaks up while Craster was talking and Craster starts ripping on him for having long hair. He makes it clear to everyone, especially Jon, that noone is allowed to touch his daughters or they will lose a hand. The scene ends with the Lord Commander asking Jon “Do you want to lead one day? Well learn how to follow.” I’m really interested with this group of characters and I’m curious to see how life is deep beyond the Wall. Side note: I guarantee one of the Night’s Watch guys will sleep with one of Craster’s daughters/wives.

We finally get introduced to Robert Baratheon’s brother, Stannis (the rightful bearer of the throne), and a few more new characters. The scene consists of a witch (or something of the sort) named Melisandre leading a ceremony for Stannis to grab a burning sword and Stannis modifying a letter that will be sent to different areas of the kingdom explaining the truth behind the Lannisters and what happened to his brother. The scene ends with Ser Davos Seaworth (looks like a cool character) talking to Stannis about gaining more troops and Melisandre uses some magic to kill The Maester. Barathians vs. Lannisters, Starks vs. Lannisters, this is going to get interesting.

Robb and Jamie begin the next scene by ridiculing each other, until Robb’s dog enters the scene (again using some 1st person view) and teases Jamie with death, leaving him chained up as he’s been for about 4 episodes now. Tyrion and his whore (or girlfriend?) enjoy their life at King’s landing, while his sister encounters Little Finger and tells him to go search for Aria. Little Finger refuses and reveals to Cersei that he knows about her and Jamie’s little secret (that they are the mother and father of Joffrey) and claims that this is his power. Cersei tells her guards to seize him and cut his throat (at this point I would have been pissed off had they killed of such an important character) but changes her mind and explains to him that this was power, ordering him to find Aria. Meanwhile, Robb explains to a Lannister messenger what his agreements to peace with them will be. The agreements are very demanding and it will surely cause problems within the Lannister house. Greyjoy tells Robb that his father can help him in battle, but Robb's mother disagrees. After convincing her, we can really see the growth of Robb as a leader as he follows the footsteps of his father.

Joffrey tells his mother that he’s heard a rumour that his father is actually Jamie, which leads to Cersei slapping him (seems like a lot of people know about the secret now). Joffrey warns her that this is the last time she has done such a thing, since there will be a consequence next time. Insert random whore house sex scene (loud fake orgasms while my speakers were turned up aren’t a good combo when your family is at home). The episode ends with the killing of all of Robert Baratheon’s bastards (ordered by either Joffrey, or more likely Cersei), where there seem to be at least 50 of them and Aria riding North with another one of Robert’s bastards.

After a long wait, I was really pleased to finally watch a new Game of Thrones episode and this one didn’t disappoint. Overall, I found it very good and I felt that it really helped set up the rest of the season. The one complaint I have is the lack of fight scenes and random scenes that were present in the first season, but I’m sure more of them will come. The next episode should be great, since Robb is coming close to King’s Landing and tensions in the Lannister house are building.

Rating for the episode: 8.6/10
