Guest Post: The State of Serbian Soccer

With one of the more anticipated soccer games in recent Serbian history, a friend asked me if he could post is thoughts after Croatia’s 2-0 win. Naturally, we welcome anyone to share their opinions on this blog; so here it is (author credit will be at the bottom of the page, I will post my own notes in italics throughout the article when necessary).

The loss to Australia…..6-0…6-0…The loss too Argentina rings through my brain…Mijatovic’s missed penalty kick to send us far in the World Cup in a game against Netherlands Mijatovic missed the penalty when the score was 1-1,( Holland would then score in the 92’ to send them through to the quarter finals). The national team losing their place to Denmark (who would go onto win it all in the 1992 Euro’s), Red Star Belgrade ’91 (A Serbian club team who lifted the European cup that year)…. All these things flashing through my mind, as the teams take the field. The game played on Friday March 22, 2013 was iconic, in both Croatian football, and Serbian football, it was a game that was long overdue, a game that would be the salt on the still fresh wounds of anyone of the nations that lost it. Mainly, it was a game to show who was better, a mini-prolonged version of the war played out on the pitch.  However, knowing what soccer means to Croats, not to mention how incredibly amazing Modric, and Rakitic are; and how intense they get at even the most obscene friendly matches, I knew the results wouldn’t be good. I have been let down by the Serbian national team many times in any aspect of any soccer competition. (This is an understatement, the Serbian team shows up to play the big boys, but then loses to countries that should not even be playing soccer).

In, reality, all I prayed for was nothing crazy too happen, really all of this past would not be forgotten but at least buried, a dying ember if you will. Seeing as how a majority of these players were either a fetus, or in diapers sucking on Legos when the two sides took to a battle ranging from village to village, massacring each other in the worst ways imaginable (only brothers could hate each other this much, people!) I did expect what I heard from the crowds the booing of the anthem, the Nazi chanting, it was expected and it will be insane not to hear the exact same being thrown when the sides take to each other on the pitch at the Marakana, probably the Yankee Stadium of soccer stadiums in the region, not to just Red Star fans, but to the entire Balkans. Lets not forget, Maksimir was the site of where one of the sparks to the war was lit, as Red Star fans chanted “We will f*** Tajci” (A Croatian national singer, held in high regard, at that time she was one of the biggest pop stars in Yugoslavia, and had competed in the Eurovision contest)in result enraging many of the Croatian nationals as they took to the pitch in a brawl involving even the Players.

As I turn the volume of my TV set up, I looked at the starting line-up for Croatia; as expected, Stimac (the Croatian head coach) brought out the best of the best, hell even if he brought out the worst of the worst, these are Croats and like Montreal in hockey, they always putting up a fight regardless of how broken they are. Then I saw the Mihajlovic (Serbian head coach) line up, here are just some scattered thoughts when I saw it : “….What in the hell….who is Brkic? Where is Stojkovic?  Where was Rukavina?, Basta?, Understandable Kolarov, and Ivanovic were there but…Nastasic…Really? Where was Kuzmanovic, arguably one of our only offensive threats? Sulejmani? Where were these players?”

Certainly Mihajlovic didn’t think he could run up against the stacked Croatian team with kids barely off the U21 team…What on earth was going on? Then I made a few “calls” if you will to people of high regard in the Serbian sports scene back in Belgrade (I FB messaged them) I asked what the hell was going on? They responded with “You can’t mess with politics, and the corruption of the national team.” It seems as if even on a national level, when it came to playing our best, going head to head against one of the biggest rivals we will ever have in any sport, the greed and corruption of our people, the soled out souls of those in head office, the leaders of the fan bases all had hands in setting these squads up, hell it was rumored that a prominent Albanian businessman (Read: DRUG DEALER, ORGAN TRAFFICKER) had his hand in the establishment of the national team. To which then I beg the question, why are we even here? I am not by any shot in any way saying that we would have beaten Croatia, that’s like saying Team USA could beat the Dream Team of ’92, but it would have been damn close…closer than anyone would have expected it to be. (Full disclosure, I firmly believe that had Kuzmanovic, Kacar, Vidic, even Jovanovic and Krasic played, that the game would not have been 2-0. Even of the players available to him, Mihajlovic really screwed us over, starting some guys who could not crack it in the MLS).

Although, Croatia had a stronger team, they provided a very weak performance especially for their level of play, Serbia hadn’t countered with much either, but in typical Balkan fashion we shot ourselves in the foot. All it took was one screw up from Kolarov (Who’s entire career will be defined by this, just ask Mijatovic who I previously mentioned up there) too open up the flood gates, and like MOB Deep rapped, “They scared to death, they shook, ain’t no such things as half way crooks.” And in a way that’s exactly what Serbia was a half way shook crook, not the real thing, no bravery, our defense collapsed, and Modric? Well even if you had a squad of police officers around him you couldn’t keep him down.  And we did have enough chances on our own end. It took Kolarov to show the team that it could be done as he sprinted up field and fired a rocket at Pletikosa (that man looks like he smokes 3 packs before every game, even during games), but to no avail. Even after that there were a few more blown chances by the much younger and inexperienced Serbian squad. At the end,  the Croats came out on top dominant, finally the conclusion to it all had happened. 2-0. Not bad you say? It could have been worse? Well, at least we have Tennis, Basketball, and Water-polo, and even Handball!- Really? In all my life as a basketball fan, never have I been more uptight about a basketball game like I am for a soccer one. I would trade all the other trophies in all of those sports for one great, hell, even a top 10 national soccer team. I know that I sound harsh, but who cares about all these other sports other than us? Much, like the Croats brag about Skiing: no one cares. I love Novak Djokovic, and I love Teodosic,(The best basketball player in Europe currently) of course I do, but other than a select few, who really brags about this stuff on worldwide level? When is the last time you stopped what you were doing to check the scores on the match between Patrick Rafter and Pete Sampras back in the day? Or too see the score between some basketball team in FIBA, or the NBA, unless it wasn’t on TV, or a massive playoff game?  But Soccer?  That’s a different story entirely. Even peasants in the most remote Siberian villages know who won the world cup last year, and won the Euros, we all talk about great soccer players, about who’s better( Messi, or Ronaldo, Barca or Real.  Was George Best better than Maradonna? Was Pele that good? And so on). Soccer is the world’s game, its life, every child in Europe/Africa/Asia has played it at one point in time. My point is, we succeed in the things that ultimately don’t matter, yet the one thing we should have been pushing we have crumbled and fallen on, too me soccer is the ultimate reflection of a country’s status. I guess I was duped into thinking that we could have done much more, and in the usual fashion, I was let down…yet again. With the Euro’s just around the corner, I pray that Mihajlovic brings out something out of this team, but I will probably be let down again. Maybe in a few years these players will become studs, and take over the game, or maybe they will just wither and fade away (Like Duke basketball stars, am I right?). Either way only time will tell.

NFL Picks and an E-Mail Exchange

Daki: Luka, I just realized that once the NBA starts we may never talk about anything else on this blog. I think this is a perfect time to bust out the time tested gimmick of exchanging e-mails and talk NFL picks (for maybe the last time until playoffs). Just to drive that point home I will sprinkle in random NBA tidbits throughout the post. But first, we might as well start with one of the games of the week in the NFL. The Atlanta Falcons going up against the Eagles of Philadelphia. How do you think your Eagles will do this week against the undefeated Falcons? The line has moved all the way to -3 and it seems that people are trusting Andy Reid off a bye-week vs. Andy Reid in any other game.

Atlanta (+3) At Philadelphia

I gotta say, I love the Eagles to win here, can't really explain why, but I just think that they are too talented to be so mediocre and with Andrew Bunym's knee injury, the people of Philadelphia need hope!

Luka: My favorite Eagles week this year was last week and we had it off. Everyone says the same thing when they talk about this team, that they could win by 40 or lose by 40 any given week and it's true. For this week though, I also am feeling an Eagles win. Reid is inexplicably great after bye weeks and a Falcons team that has practically clinched their division already (Let-Down game!!) adds up to a possible Philly victory that will get all their fans (myself included) praising the likes of Vick and Jackson as the second-coming of Montana and Rice. I'm personally excited to start calling a (hopefully) 4-3 team the Super-Bowl favorites next week. As for Bynum and the Sixers, I don't think any fan will tell you they were shocked when they started hearing Bynum injured stories. That comes with the territory but I do hope he gets better and we  have an NBA season where the Atlantic Division is undoubtedly the strongest (maybe the Mayans were right).

Daki: Yes, for the first time in a long time it seems that the East actually managed to get stronger across the conference. Speaking of strong conferences, how about this NFC? I am making a slightly bold prediction that 11 wins might not be enough for the playoffs and that one team from the NFC East, North, and West will legitimately feel that they could have made the playoffs in almost any other season. Which is what makes games like these:

Carolina (+7.5) At Chicago

So important. Chicago has relatively few "easy" games left and has to win them all to a) keep up with Atlanta for home-field advantage and b) fend off teams like the Giants and Packers for a first-round bye. Am I crazy or does Carolina get random respect from Vegas? Chicago by 2+ touchdowns lock it down.

Luka:I agree with your point on Vegas' unfounded respect for the Panthers and think it has to come from the Cam Newton effect. But is he even that good? I mean don't get me wrong, hes incredibly gifted physically but his team is 1-5 and it seems like every week more and more stories of Cam throwing his teammates under the bus seem to surface. I too like the Bears to cover this game. Chicago is somehow a sneaky 5-1.

Daki: Chicago is playing the old San Antonio Spurs trick of not drawing any attention as they demolish the league.

Indianapolis (+3.5) At Tennessee

Is it possible that one of these two teams could sneak into the AFC playoffs? Have they caught the guy giving Chris Johnson steroids? That has to be the logical explanation of his sudden re-emergence as a running back who can beat teams by himself. Johnson scares me enough to pick the Titans at home here

Luka: Lance Armstrong's guy had to find a new client. As for the game I feel like it'll come down to whether or not you trust Chris Johnson's ability to string consistent games together (Matt Hasselbeck is starting for the Titans. Yes, you read that correctly) and personally I feel like until I see it again, I'm not jumping back onto that ship. So give me Luck and the Colts to somehow be 4-3 after this game. Quick, let's go to the next game though before I change my mind.

Jacksonville (-14.5) At Green Bay

Daki: *sigh* The Jaguars? We have to talk about one of the least interesting franchises in North American sports? CFL teams are more interesting than these guys. At least they get to be one of the teams that the Packers slaughter on their way back to 'Superbowl team' status. Why isn't David Stern running the NFL? He would have moved the Jaguars to Toronto years ago. Even better, nobody would have cared (unlike the Seattle Sonics fans). On that note what do you think of Stern announcing his retirement (15 months early?) I will always remember him as the guy who screwed the 02' Kings out of a title and as a stubborn old man who to this day refuses to acknowledge that his league has a massive officiating problem.

Luka: I just thought of something, how amazing would it be if the NFL adopted a relegation system with the CFL where the worst two teams in the NFL get replaced by the two best CFL teams each year? You're telling me this game wouldn't be more fun to talk about if Green Bay had to go to Saskatchewan to take on the Rough Riders instead? Goodell and CFL commissioner whose name I didn't even bother googling. Let's make this happen. Green Bay should demolish the Jags at home so i'll pick them to cover although I'm not feeling it's a lock they'll win by 2+ touchdowns. David Stern I'll always remember as this sort of grumpy old bully who despite some missteps (the microfiber ball? that was fun) has made the NBA a juggernaut of a league worldwide. All i ask from him before he retires is to move a team back to Seattle and to give the Kings the 02 title. The early 2000's Lakers were the most unlikable team in that era (Fuck Rick Fox) so who's saying no to this?

Daki: The people who are saying no to that are those moronic Laker fans who think that Kobe is the best player in the league today (sorry, he may not be top 5 anymore). I love the relegation idea, if anything it would single-handily save the CFL. Can you imagine if the Redskins had to go to Montreal (the team who they stole the Expos from) for a playoff game? Nazi Germany would receive a better welcome. If by some miracle anyone in the NFL/CFL is reading this make it happen! All we ask is for credit and royalties. Anyways, on to the next game:

Miami Dolphins (+3) At New York Jets

A perplexing line to me. I think that this Jets team is sneaky underrated and will take care of business in this key division game.

Luka: A good defense combined with a wacky offense and the dynamic duo of Sanchez and Tebow (kidding, obviously) spells trouble for the Dolphins this week. I'll take the Jets too although i wouldn't be surprised if I turn on the game in the second quarter to see a score of 24-0 for the Dolphins while the Jets fans boo Sanchez and plea for Tebow. Also, Rex Ryan has to be in the conversation for coach of the year right? I mean who's on this Jets team?

Daki: Absolutely.

New England (-7) Vs. Rams - From London England!

Perplexing that this game will be on at the same time that Chelsea takes on Man U and Liverpool plays Everton in the Merseyside derby. Just poor decision making from the NFL schedule makers here. I think that the Rams cover this week, the Patriots need to prove that they are a good team before spreads over 4 points are applied to them.

Luka: I`m taking the Patriots, Chelsea, and a draw in the Merseyside derby. I`m not sure anyone in London even cares that they get an NFL game each year. If the NFL was serious in expanding its popularity across the globe, you`d think that this game would be a bigger deal each year and yet it never is. Strange.

Daki: San Diego (-3) At Cleveland A.k.a: Free money!

Luka: It should tell you how bad the Chargers season is going that I was going to pick the Browns this week before  reading that Trent Richardson might be out. Without Richardson I think that Cleveland's offense will be more reliant on Brandon Weeden and no one should have to bet on a team "more reliant on Brandon Weeden". So give me the mediocre Chargers on the road.

Daki: Seattle (+2.5) At Detroit

At first I almost wagered all I had on this game, then I realized that the game is being played in Detroit and not in Seattle. The fact of the matter is that the Seahawks are not a very good road team and I fully expect the Lions to cement that notion.

***The James Harden Trade put everything into flux for this post, so we shelved it and decided to stop here.

Countdown To Euro 2012: 15 Days To Go - Ukraine

Ukraine

How'd they get here: Automatically qualified as co-hosts

Last Appearance: Never (1992 as the U.S.S.R.)

Best Appearance: N/A

 Schedule:
                        June 11 vs Sweden
                        June 15 vs France
                        June 19 vs England

The Story:

One of the competition's co-hosts appear to be stumbling to the starting line as the tournament draws closer and closer. First there is the political turmoil surrounding the imprisonment and beating of ex-premier Yulia Tymoshenko that has caused quite a stir internationally with some world leaders (such as Germany's Prime Minister) threatening to boycott games played in the Ukraine. The politics have even taken a dangerous turn with an attack in the city of Dnipropetrovsk (not a city that will host the competition) injuring 26 people. Something not lost on the nations competing as only 3 countries have adopted Ukraine as their residence for the duration of the tournament.

The country's soccer team is also hoping things will work out when the tournament begins as they are a group of young unproven players led by aging stars who aren't what they used to be. Ukraine's team is coached by Oleh Blokhin, previous winner of the Ballon d'Or (awarded to the best football player in Europe) as a player. Blohkin coached Ukraine in their only other appearance at a major competition (the World Cup in 2006) and will hope to bring that experience to lead his country to a surprise quarter-final berth.

Countdown to Euro 2012 - An Introduction

Have we all recovered from Chelsea thrillingly parking the bus for 300 straight minutes en route to becoming the European club champions? Luckily for everyone but Chelsea fans (who might never stop celebrating this improbable championship run) we have another huge soccer event coming up in just 17 days. The event I'm talking about is of course Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine, UEFA's premier international competition where 16 nations (this number will rise to 24 starting with Euro 2016 in France simply so UEFA can make more money) compete to become Europe's best footballing nation. With the competition just 17 days away I thought it'd be a good idea to do a countdown to Euro 2012 with a new blog post each day leading up to the tournament.

Each blog post will be a team preview of each of the participating countries starting with the team I think has the least likely shot at winning followed by teams with better chances until June 7 (one day before the tournament starts) where I will write about the team I believe will win it all (spoiler alert: it will be Spain unless there's an injury). Why do this? For one it will give me an opportunity to write something about I like each day until the tournament starts but more importantly because my country's (Serbia) team didn't make the competition, this will give me an opportunity to learn about each country's squad and which ones will be fun to watch and which certainly won't (I'm looking at you Greece). Not having your country qualify does have benefits as you can watch the games from the outside simply cheering for your favourite player or for a good competitive game as opposed to being completely emotionally connected to your nation's performance. With that being said though, I would still immediately trade the passive outsider feel of watching the tournament for the slim chance at having Serbia win the trophy even with the sure emotional scarring that comes with being invested in any sport. Let's just move on before I start to get sad about how we couldn't beat Estonia even once in our qualifying group.

Hopefully these posts will be fun and entertaining reads as we learn more about the teams that will participate in this year's European Championship.

I'll leave you with the official song for Euro 2012, Endless Summer by Macy Gray Oceana.

Until tomorrow when the countdown begins with team #16!

2012 Champions League Final Preview

It was never supposed to end like this. On December 16, 2011 when UEFA held the draw for the knock-out stage of the 2011-2012 Champions League, every soccer fan worldwide immediately came to the same realization. We were going to get an El Clasico in the final. On May 19th we were going to get Messi vs Ronaldo, Guardiola vs Mourinho, Catalonia vs Spain. The greatest club competition in soccer was going to finish with the greatest rivalry in the sport between the (allegedly) two best club teams. It was going to be perfect. And yet it wasn’t. First, on April 17th Mario Gomez’ goal in the 90th minute gave Bayern Munich an unexpected victory over Real Madrid and then one day later Chelsea managed to upset Barcelona in the other semi-final with a Drogba goal that came very much against the run of play. However even after the first leg of both semis the public and the media wrote them off, calling them minor speed bumps on the inevitable collision course between Real and Barca. And with both second legs being played in Spain, it was hard to argue.

FUCK MAN CITY

Editors note: After building up so much frustration at last Sunday's game, my friend, a long time Man-U fan finally cracked and asked to vent his feelings on this site. Needless to say the result is delightful, I hope you enjoy this article, I sure did.

I assume if you are reading this sentence right now you have already read the title and you have an slight idea what the tone of this article will be about. I assume if your reading this article, you are also a soccer fan and that you have already watched the Manchester United versus Man City game that took place last Sunday. I assume very little or none of you are Man City fans, but if by some divine miracle you are a Man City fan then just go away, I don’t even want you to read this, just fuck off, just move your mouse to the top right corner of your window and click on the X symbol. Thanks for nothing you fucking wankers. I have so many hateful things to say, but where to start?
By now you have probably concluded that I am a Man U fan, and the event that took place last Sunday is not one that I want to stay in my memory. I remember October, 23, 2011 like it was yesterday, my day went a little something like this. I woke up late, missed the first half, went to the library, opened up the game to see the score 1-0 for Man City, then a minute later Balotelli scores to make it 2-0, went on ESPN to check who scored the first goal only to realize United were down to ten men, shortly afterwards Aguero scored to make it 3-0. Everything was all going so wrong so fast so I just decided to shut off my laptop. Then I slowly took out a gun out of my bag, placed it on my temple, and pulled the trigger to end the misery….
Firstly, just looking at United’s lineup on Sunday depressed me, the line up that Sir Alex put out wasn’t even close to full potential. I hated this starting lineup. First of all why da fuck is Evans playing over Phil Jones, WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Phil Jones has been the shining star for United and he’s the face of the youngsters that are coming through for the team. He faster, stronger, smarter, and a way better leader than Evans, but somehow he was on the bench and that piece of shit was on the field. I mean how can you trust a guy who makes tackles like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cs88nvpF_gw . When Evans first came through I really thought he was going to be a star, but with time he only proved that he was mentally challenged. I don’t ever want to see him in the starting lineup, the only time I ever want to see Evans’s name in there is if Chris Smalling, Ferdinand, Jones, Evra, Rafael, Fabio, Valencia all cannot physically stand up, and Vidic only has one leg left to stand on, then and only then do I ever want to see his name in the starting lineup. I don’t like blaming Sir Alex for anything, but this was definitely a huge mistake that costs the game. Ferdinand is already way past his prime 3 years ago so I don’t even want to pick on him. To the new goalie, I have nothing bad to say about De Gea nor do I have anything nice, I know the 6 goals was not really his fault at all, but I feel like if Van der Sar or any of the other great United goalies in the same situation they would not have let that happen. Something about him just seems off and he just doesn’t seem like a United goalie, please bring the flying Dutchman back. I don’t know why im hating on United players but im just so irrational right now that everything is making me mad. I guess its because I haven’t let out the source of my hatred which is Man City…

Lockouts and what they mean to sports this year

With the NBA's latest labor talks going nowhere and the NFL's ongoing lockout, it has become a very real possibility that we may have to wait a full year before we are able to watch football and basketball.

For both NBA and NFL fans, the prospect of missing a season (particularly when we have had some awesome ones) is a disaster.  The even worst part about it is the fact that we as fans have no control in this, it is entirely up to the owners and the player's unions.  If you are not a devoted fan of baseball (like me) then this is an awful time in terms of following sports you like.  This article will not bore you with lockout news that is being reported everywhere constantly, instead it will examine the fact that for some, these lockouts present a golden opportunity.  Although the NBA and NFL are losing out; a lot of other sports may stand to benefit from these lockouts.  Let's examine each sport that can benefit by itself in order to get a better understanding of what may be at stake.

National Hockey League (NHL)

In my opinion, the NHL stands to gain the most if the NBA and NFL take a one year leave.  The sports void that will appear in a lot of sports fans must be filled, and in North America, the easiest way to fill it is with NHL.  I vow to jump right in and start watching hockey fully, and keeping a journal of my experience as a new fan (gotta write about something).  Odds are, there are many out there like me who will give hockey a chance, and chances are that a number of them will stick with it.  The fact that the NHL is coming off of a very strong season wont hurt it either.
