Upon further review, doing two episodes every two weeks makes no sense, because ultimately you as the reader wont care about a post that is a week late. Anyways, for episode 3 of Survivor's 23rd season I decided to do a running diary.
0:00 Start of the show, a nice montage of last weeks episode with Probst doing the voice-over as usual. Yawn.
0:02 Christine starts us off with this gem: "I think they weren't ready for someone who actually wanted to play the game" Yup, because people who 'play' the game are always voted out first, go home already. Back at Coach's camp, Makayila questions Brandon's morals, that confession at tribal will probably ruin him in the long run.
0:04 Tree-mail calls for two players from each tribe to go to redemption island and see the first person get eliminated, at this point there really is no benefit to going and watching inferior players face off. As the game progresses going to these will be crucial (as we saw last year).
0:05 Probst uses the word anymosity! Christine bitches about coach again. One thing that's really bothered me so far: everyone has found Semhar attractive... are the standards really this low on the show? There are much better-looking girls this season. Aaaaaaand Semhar blesses us with an un-important (but pretty impressive) poem before the challenge begins.
0:06 The challenge: hold a pole (and keep adding to it every few minutes) and on top of the pole you are balancing a totem. As usual, Jeff keeps giving the players a play by play, I really do not think I could compete with someone constantly commenting on my performance. Both women are up to three poles.
0:10 Much to coach's disappointment Christine wins, and Semhar cries and feels her tribe 'abandoned' her. Thanks for coming out, arguably one of the worst survivor players of all time. Will not miss her.
0:11 One vastly under-rated aspect of this show is the music, it is always good. Christine also says "I know Ill win" At least she is confident.
0:12 We get to hear Brandon talk about feeling bad and moping then he reveals to everyone that he is Russel's nephew (I had episode 5 in the office pool). Right away Makyila (who is a ligerine football player, I feel you should know this stuff) does not trust him. Coach says that this confession is a big mistake, so by my count, Brandon is up to 2 of those right now.
0:15 Over at the Savai tribe, Papa Bear laments the lack of close relations he has made, this is good type of thinking, but he ultimately may be doomed. His focus is on the challenges, and attempting to stay in the game as long as possible; he reasons that he is 3rd in line to go. I like when players let us in on stuff like this, I learn things I'll probably need when I compete on the show (never).
0:17 Makaiyla confronts Brandon! She wants to know 'whats up'. How does Brandon respond? He calls the whole tribe over and calls her out saying "you have no alliance". Then he says "Keep me out of the drama". WOOOOW
0:17 Still taking this in
0:18 I'm trying to decide whether or not Brandon is mentally stable, we now have one scene of Makaiyla crying, and Brandon whining again. The wily veteran Coach immediately takes Brandon to the side and tells him that what he just did is not smart (3 mistakes!).
0:20 Immunity/Reward challenge (the reward is coffee, sugar, tea, milk) everyone is very happy about this. The challenge consists of an obstacle course in the water, followed by some grappling hook skills ending with a simple puzzle. I don't think I've seen this one before.
0:22 It's Ozzy vs. Brandon and Brandon is killing it, mostly due to his team knowing how to feed a rope properly, Ozzy very frustrated, even dropped an F-bomb.
0:23 "Papa Bear struggling to keep up" Again, very unnecessary from Jeff, you think he wants you to announce to his tribe that he sucks? Just call out the team.
0:26 We are at the second part of the challenge, the contestants have to use a grappling hook to grab bags from a platform, coach is 4/4 so far, somehow you felt that a guy who calls him self the dragon slayer would own this.
0:27 5/5 now for coach, Probst calls his performance phenomenal.
0:27 Upolu (Coach's tribe) wins immunity! Rather easily I might add. Papa Bear lies down like he just ran a marathon.
0:28 Jim calls Papa Bear a 'zero' guess we know who he is voting for. Ozzy agrees with him, saying its between Papa Bear and Cochran. The tribe decides to off Papa Bear but at the same time they're going to tell him that its Cochran. I hate this, the guys know its going to be one of them, why get his hopes up? It serves no advantage and if he does come back via redemption island he could screw you later.
0:31 Papa Bear proves his investigating skills when he figures out that its him, after they tell him Cochran. Naturally he starts looking for the idol. Here we go. Too bad Ozzy already found it. This surprises the other tribe members...really? The guy is doing what he needs to stay in the game people, calm down. In my opinion the other members should blind-side Ozzy, but that makes too much sense.
0:33 Papa Bear goes with the 'make a fake idol' strategy! It's too bad he might be going soon, he is so paranoid its great.
0:34 Not to be out-done the Billy Beane of survivor (Cochran) correctly guesses that Papa Bear only wants them to think he has the idol. Finally, some intelligence this season.
0:36 At tribal the first guy to come under attack is Cochran. He defends himself well (he is at Harvard law after all). Then Papa Bear reveals that the alliance of five will get him, Cochran, and Dawn out as soon as possible. Jim tries to downplay this, but Papa Bear owns him by saying "You need to worry because you're in the five" Nicely done. Also, if he does wind up at redemption island he should do what Russel did last season: Tell the other tribe everything.
0:40 Papa Bear looks like a man beaten. Some great music playing right now, too bad there is no major twist to go with it.
0:41 One vote each for Papa Bear, Jim, and Cochran so far.
0:42 Papa Bear to redemption island. Scenes from the next episode reveal that Cochran makes his move! I knew he had it in him (after all, a guy who knows that much about survivor can never be counted out) and Brandon gets compared to Russel (I had episode 4 in the office pool for this one)
Until next week!
