You probably noticed that episode 4 was not reviewed. This was due to some circumstances, but had I written a review for it, the episode would have received a 9/10 it was the best episode of this season hands down. As always, these reviews may (probably will) contain spoilers so if you don't want to be spoiled go watch the episode first.
I have to admit, the last episode left me wanting to see this one quite a bit. We were left with Jesse and Mike taking a drive to who-knows-where and Walter freaking out. The writers did not disappoint us here, choosing to pick up right where last episode left off. We are treated to some GTA style driving from Walt as he is telling Saul to leave all his money to his wife, followed by him leaving a very emotional message to Skyler at their voice machine. This scene was done really well and more importantly felt realistic. It was not just Walt weaving in and out of lanes, but cars were actually getting out of his way and pedestrians looked horrified. The context of him leaving the messages told us that he was going to do something drastic and he did, getting out at the 'pollos' restaurant and demanding to see Gus. But as we are getting accustomed to it this season, Gus was not there, instead we got the obligatory call from Mike assuring Walter that Jesse was fine and would not be in trouble.
It was a relief getting the confirmation that Jesse would only be helping with dead pick-ups rather than being executed in the dessert. He is the show's best character and losing him now would have truly been a stunning decision. However, Gus's plan to make Jesse look like a hero (I use the word hero loosely here, because what he is doing is anything but heroic) in order to boost his morale. I have to hand it to the man, it would have been so easy to kill off Jesse and threaten Walt but Gus is maintaining the professionalism through and through. In between these action-packed scenes we also got some development on the White household. Walter and Skyler sleep together and seemingly their relationship is fixed. It is a little ironic that Skyler is embracing the very thing she kicked Walt out of the house for, but as I have stated in earlier reviews, she is also 'Breaking Bad' at this point.
One last scene of note, which I thought was absolutely spectacular was the dinner at the Schredder residence. After seeing Hank seemingly at peace with the investigation (he called it closure) we get Walt of all people to push Hank right back into it. This may seem unrealistic to some fans, but when has Walt wanted things to be easy? Now that the excitement and control of his former secret was lost he regressed into a whiny and soft character when he tried to act tough. Him telling Hank that the notes were someone else's work is just Walt's way of getting excitement and control back to his 'Heisenberg' persona. True to form Hank did some final digging and found a 'Los Pollos' Bag among the evidence from Gabe's apartment, but the thing is, Gabe is a vegan! Now things should get very interesting if Hank makes the logical step of investigating Gus's chain of restaurants. I look forward to seeing how the investigation will play out, and how Walter will handle having the heat back on him in future episodes.
A very good 2-episode stretch to remind us why Breaking Bad is a great show, this episode receives an 8.2 from me. Just for the Walter scene alone which was also the best (my opinion) of the episode.
