There aren’t many surprises here. There are three films
currently competing for the Oscar for Best Motion Picture, and all three have
been nominated. The two dramas are Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty and the other
is Les Miserables. For the dramas, it will come down to whether the voters have
a higher honor for their history or their politics. And Les Miserables seems to
be a lock at this moment in the Musical/Comedy category.
Movies – Best
Actor/Actress
Lead actor for a drama will most likely go to Daniel Day-Lewis,
as he delivered an excellent performance as the 16th US president
and voters are aware of his acting abilities (he may become the first actor to
win three Oscars for Best Actor in February). Joaquin Phoenix’s performance was
insane and he’s definitely the runner-up in my book, but I don’t see votes
picking him over DDL.
Lead actor for a musical or comedy is going to have no
effect on the Oscars because none of these guys will win, but Hugh Jackman is
currently the frontrunner and it’s good to see Bradley Cooper nominated for his
terrific portrayal of a man with bi-polar struggling to deal with himself and
his family.
Movies – Other
Best director typically goes to the Best Motion Picture. I’m
surprised that Tom Hooper was not nominated for Les Miserables, but from the
ones nominated, I expect Kathryn Bigelow to win, simply because Lincoln was not
difficult to direct (then again, the Hurt Locker beat out Avatar for
direction).
Screenplay is 100% going to Lincoln, and I agree because the
entire movie is about the screenplay. If you like 150 minutes of talking, you’ll
like Lincoln.
I don’t have much idea on the song and score categories, but
a crowd favorite for song is definitely Skyfall by Adele.
Best animated film will most likely go to Brave or
Wreck-it-Ralph (Pixar vs. Disney), and my pick would definitely be the latter.
As for foreign language film, Amour is being mentioned as a
Best Motion Picture contender for the Oscars, so it doesn’t seem like any other
movie has a chance right now.
TV – Everything
There are simply too many TV shows to be able to keep up
with all the annual nominations. However there are some points I would like to
make.
Homeland is being nominated for season 2 and it better not
win anything except for Damien Lewis’ performance. The writers took a shit on
the show after episode 4 and it’s being wild since then. Homeland went from one
of the best shows on TV to one of the most ridiculous and stupid.
Breaking Bad hasn’t won anything at the Globes, and I don’t think
it will this year either since it’s being nominated for only half of a season
(stupidest decision ever to split up the season).
Modern Family is most likely taking all the comedy awards
again.
The rest of the awards are up in the air. The Golden Globes
are unpredictable and in all honesty, everyone knows the Emmy’s are a lot more meaningful
for TV shows.
