Why start a post with a photo of the Seinfeld cast? Is it to pay respect to the best sitcom ever (this is not arguable, there isn't an episode of Seinfeld that's not watchable and hilarious)? No. It is because no other TV show personifies the 90's as much as it does (seriously, every episode of Seinfeld would be ruined if someone had a cell phone). In Throwback Thursdays (no idea what else to call it), a weekly feature, Jovan and I will each pick 3 "throwback songs" (any song from the 00's and before), post the songs, and write a short excerpt about each one. It will let us reminisce about simpler times where the only things that tweeted were birds while the reader gets to enjoy some great good entertaining music. So without further ado,
Jovan:
Heaven Is A Place On Earth - Belinda Carlisle
If you’ve seen Harold and Kumar go to White Castle, you know the scene where they steal the truck and listen to those old songs (those songs which you might not realize you know and actually like until you hear them and start singing them yourself). Heaven is a Place on Earth is one of those songs. The 80s had a very distinct style of music, one that I miss, and I don’t mind hearing this song once every while to remind me of a great decade of music.
I've Been Thinking About You - Londonbeat
I listened to this one frequently in the 90s and had forgotten about it until recently when I heard it on the radio. The background music and beat are a joy to listen to, and paired with great vocals from Londonbeat, it is one of my favourite 90s songs. I also never thought someone saying “shi-pow-pow” in a song could actually make it sound good.
Miami - Will Smith
One of the most overplayed, but deservingly so, songs in the late 1990s, Miami was a huge hit. Will Smith does not have many, if any, really good songs, but Miami is nice to hear a decade later, and it’s still the city where the heat is on. The heat was on with this song, and it’s still on my playlist, where it will stay until I decide to not have a playlist anymore (which is never).

Admit it, most of you (myself included) had no idea that Crazy Town sang this song. To most people this song was simply "the one with the weird music video in the forest" (look at the haircuts in the video, remember when having frosted tips was considered normal? I think every band member has them). However this 2001 hit holds up reasonably well today and is as fun to hear today as it was 10 years ago. An interesting fact about this song is that DJ AM was actually a member of Crazy Town shortly before this song came out. I still enjoy this song and it made me google Crazy Town which is always a good thing. One final thing, I always wonder if one-hit wonders love their one hit for making them famous or if they hate it as their whole career ends up being defined only by it.
Simply a very easy listening song that always makes me think of summer whenever I hear it. This 1997 single allowed Sugar Ray to have their debut album, Floored go double platinum (to put that in perspective, Rick Ross has never had an album go platinum). This is a very busy song with rock, pop, and reggae all mixed in together but somehow it works giving us one of the "cooler" songs of the 90's (and look at Mark McGrath's hair... Frosted Tips!!).
Every person who grew up in the 90's knows this song as soon as it is played. They also immediately remember the awesome video that came with it which had Shaggy as some sort of super-rich don whose job is to promote adultery and conceal cheating (this made complete sense before). The video depicts the aftermath of Shaggy's friend (even though he sings half the song I've never met anyone who knows his name) cheating with the girl next door. This song gets bonus points for being a song that white people (like myself) pretend to know but end up singing only the last part of each of Shaggy's sentences (it always went something like this - "(mumbling, mumbling, mumbling), RUN FAAHHST!!). Finally, if this song came out today it would immediately become the refusal of adultery anthem for people such as Tiger Woods, Kobe Bryant, Tony Parker and every other athlete ever.
