Breaking Bad Season 4 Episode 12: 'End Times' Review

Spoilers below, fair warning.

This episode of Breaking Bad was like watching a great athlete put the finishing touches on an MVP season.  Not sinse the third and fourth seasons of the wire (still easily the best show ever, this is not up for debate) have I had the pleasure of enjoying a television show this much.  Season 4 of Breaking Bad has really been a joy and it is a shame that there is only one episode left before a year of waiting.  This episode was not without its tense moments, but slowed down considerably from the last few.  This is a nice calming period before we get to next weeks finale (titled 'Face Off') and this episode felt more like a stage-setter much like the episode 'half-measures' was last year.

There is not really a point in discussing the minor happenings of the episode, because everyone on the internet is focusing on the question of who poisoned Brock?  The main theories are almost divided down the middle with one side saying Walt did it and the other saying Gus did it.  Before getting into that we have to acknowledge two more theories: first, Brock may have poisoned himself, very unlikely.  Second, Skyler somehow did it, again unlikely but not impossible; she has the connections with Saul, she was more sane than Walt as of last episode and seems to be cold and calculating so I do not put anything past her at this point.  Now that those are out of the way, lets get to it.

The Case that Walt poisoned Brock
Jovan spectacularly pointed out that when Walt is sitting by his pool and spinning the gun he gets an idea when it points to the plant.  From here we also have Huel frisking Jesse when he came to the office and upon further review (I watched the scene five times to make sure) it looks like Huel takes something and quickly pockets it before anyone noticed.  If he took the cigarette only (unlikely) then he would just have to give it to Saul (who we know has contact with Andrea and Brock and would be able to get close enough to do the deed), if he took the box then I guess he would stash it in Jesse's car after taking the poisoned cigarette out, its the only way that they could get the box back to Jesse without him noticing something suspicious.  After all, I have had plenty of experiences in thinking I lost my phone only to find it in my car, so this is not implausible.  Furthermore, it is absolute genius on Walt's part.  Walter knows that the only way to ensure the safety of him and his family is to kill Gus and he knows that without Jesse that is impossible.  So Walt, to answer your "what could I possibly gain from poisoning the kid?" question, I answer with: Quite a bit.

The Case that Gus poisoned Brock

Basically, what Walter said.  Gus desperately wants to get rid of Hank and Walt but can't until he has Jesse's okay, the best way to do it is by making Jesse think that Walt hurt someone he cares about (and he does not have that many people to care for in his life).  The thing is that both theories make sense and both could be correct.  We may find out next episode or next season, but when we do it will make sense regardless because the writers have crafted things to perfection.  Even the scene in the hospital church where Jesse drops the "He has been poisoned" line we cant gauge Gus's reaction.  Did Gus figure out that Walt told Jesse that only he could have poisoned Brock, or did he realize that Walt poisoned Brock and manipulated Jesse? Brilliant stuff.

As fans we were also treated to two scenes that could only be described as oncredibly intense.  First, the scene with Jesse, the gun, and Walter.  For a split second I thought Jesse was going to pull the trigger, thats how beliavable it all looked and that's why Breaking Bad will clean house at next year's emmys (they did get the seaon started in time to be considered this year).  The second scene of course was the last scene.  Did Gus figure out that something was fishy and decide to play it safe?  Did Walter's glasses give off a reflection that gave him away?  We just have to wait and find out.  As for who the 'face off' next episode will be between, here are thepossibilities: Walt-Gus-Jesse-Hank in any match-up, Skyler-Saul-Walter-Jesse in any order. I. Cant. Wait.

Overall Rating for this episode: 9.3/10
