Has there ever been such a great movie that really has no business being this good? Realistically speaking, the accents used by Al Pacino and especially Steven Bauer (he played Manny, Tony Montana's best friend) are laughable and if they were used in a movie today would definitely be ridiculed. Also, the iconic last scene is quite ridiculous but everyone shrugs it off by saying "he was on a lot of coke". Despite all of this, I love Scarface and everything about it. It is solely responsible for 60% of all ill-advised purchases by rappers and pro athletes (watch any Cribs episode and you'll see this), the inspiration for one of the best video games of all time - GTA: Vice City (Fuck you Lance) and even an awful song by Future (the remix by Drake is bearable only because of Drizzy's verse). The one thing Scarface has done that I hate is it has let every single guy think they can do a Tony Montana impression. You can't. No one can do it but Al Pacino. Anyone else who does it sounds like a mentally challenged Latino speaking broken English. That's my mini-rant of the week. Hit the jump for the songs.
Jovan:
Elvis Presley - Burning Love
We all know Elvis was a genius, which is why he’s the highest grossing dead celebrity of all time. He has numerous awesome hits, and Burning Love is definitely one of his best songs. It also reminds me of Lilo & Stitch, as well as The Game Plan (starring The Rock), both good movies which had great soundtracks, led by the Elvis Presley single Burning Love.
Dirty Dancing Soundtrack - Time of My Life
One of the better hits in the 1980s, it was featured in a terrific scene in Dirty Dancing with Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Gray (I can’t get over Patrick Swayze’s hilarious dancing). It’s also in a more recent movie, Crazy Stupid Love, starring Ryan Gosling, as he brings a girl home, imitates Patrick Swayze’s move and lifts the girl into the air, making her want to get into bed with him (even Ryan Gosling admits that it’s ridiculous). Both are great movies, and the song itself is lovely to listen to.
Marc Anthony - I Need To Know
Great song. I Need to Know is always on the radio, and for a reason. If you’re not familiar with it, give it a listen. Also, good job to Marc Anthony for being with Jennifer Lopez all those years. But now it looks like Bradley Cooper is capitalizing on the situation. Good for him.
Luka:
Lil' Bow Wow - Basketball
The lead single from the 2002 movie Like Mike (The most unrealistic movie of the 00's, not because Lil Bow Wow gets special basketball powers from a pair of MJ's old shoes allowing him to lead the LA Knights to a playoff spot, but because it shows Vince Carter trying for the Toronto Raptors. Too much of a leap for me.). Not really sure why I enjoy this song and video so much but I do know that since its release and up till now, every time I hear the opening beat I get excited. Btw, how random is it that Fabolous is in this song?
Big L & Jay-Z - 97 Freestyle
R.I.P. Big L. The Len Bias of rap. The most potential by far out of any rapper that failed to make it big and while I think that death helped some of the other rap greats' careers by cementing their statuses as legends who died too young (I think death helped Pac more than Biggie but that's a topic for another time), it killed the career of what could have been one of the greatest to pick up the mic. Oh yeah, Jay-Z, remember him? He's also on this freestyle (he also kills it) but it doesn't matter because as he's rapping you're just waiting on Big L to come back in. Hopefully this freestyle persuades you to check out some of his other work. R.I.P.
Jennifer Lopez - Waiting For Tonight
Since Jovan decided to go with a Marc Anthony song, I thought I'd close out this week's songs with one of J-Lo's classics (the word classic used very loosely here) from 1999 (This song gets the award for making me feel old as I can't believe its been 12 years). Just a good club tune that is fun to listen and dance to. The video has J-Lo singing and dancing in what appears to be a very windy part of the jungle where there is a new year's party going on. Also, Jennifer Lopez was/is/always will be insanely hot. Watch the video. Marc Anthony, if the rumors are true and you cheated on her with Jada Pinkett Smith then you're an idiot. Simple as that. J-Lo on the other hand, how do you feel about 19 year olds who live in Toronto and have part-time jobs? Call me.
Until Next Week.
