Throwback Thursdays #3

I thought I'd make the picture for this week's installment of Throwback Thursdays one of the Butabi brothers from the 1998 movie A Night at the Roxbury. If someone asks you whether you have seen/liked this movie and you respond with a no then I'm not sure I can be your friend (unless of course the no is followed by a yeeeesssss). In the year it was released, Shakespeare in Love won the Academy Award for best picture. Now, can anyone honestly say they legitimately enjoy watching Shakespeare in Love more than A Night at the Roxbury? I'm not talking about cinematic qualities, simply entertainment value. It's no contest. Roxbury wins that battle every time. I mean how could it not? It launched the movie careers of Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan (1/2 ain't bad), had a great soundtrack, and gave people everywhere a simple dance move that is fun to do. Now on to the music, as always Jovan and I will be sharing 3 classic songs with our thoughts to go with them.

Jovan:

Various Artists - We Are The World

Some of the best singers in the business came together to create this beautiful song with its strong and powerful message. They recently tried to replicate it, but it included a rap part that made me want to strangle myself.

Men At Work - Down Under

Lyrically it’s sort of stupid, and I don’t know what to say about the video, but a popular hit back in the 80s that’s catchy enough to make it to my iPod.

Bee Gees - You Should Be Dancing

It was a catchy disco hit back in the 1970s, made popular by John Travolta’s performance to it in Saturday Night Fever. It’s not as good as a lot of the other 1970s songs I know, but its relation to that scene makes it all that much better. How awesome would it be to perform Travolta’s dance move at 1:46 in a club? Haha.

Luka:

Eminem ft. Dr. Dre - Guilty Conscience

With October 19th being Marshalls 39th birthday I couldn't think of a better song to start with. This song is off Em's first real studio album, The Slim Shady LP which was released in early 1999. This song has it all: catchy beat, memorable lyrics (my favourite being when Shady begins to call out Dr. Dre - ``Uhhh-aahh! Temper Temper! Mr. Dre? Mr. N.W.A.? Mr. AK comin' straight outta Compton y'all better make way?
How in the fuck you gonna tell this man not to be violent?``) and a great premise ( I love the twilight zone set-up with 3 stories, each starting with a narration). Great song that features the best rapper of all time (a topic for a different article) and the best producer of all time (both of Dre`s albums changed the way rap music was made and his best is better than anyone else`s).

Michael Jackson - Beat It

A classic MJ song. Not much else to say about the song itself other than that the guitar solo in the song is by  Eddie Van Halen (The only guitar solo that he recorded despite the ones he made for Van Halen). The video is also entertaining and features some of the gayest gangs I`ve ever seen. Also, every time I hear this song now I think of Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson competing in a male model fashion walk-off. Thanks Zoolander.

Soul Decision - Faded

This song was a huge hit in the year 2000. Extremely catchy tune that everyone loves when they hear it. There are 3 different versions to this song, including one with a fairly decent rap verse from Thrust (I had to google that). The song`s lyrics seem ahead of their time as the lead singer (who looks like Brad Pitt) sings about ``game`` and getting ``faded``. Can we get Soul Decision some sort of residual payments for this?

Get Faded over the weekend and we'll see you next week!
